ShiftThePower, as well as the strength and diversity of networks

In order to create a system that harnesses the power of communities, advances equality, dignity, and justice, and is built on shared values and movement generosity, #ShiftThePower is a global network of activists, practitioners, and allies. Here is the link to the #ShiftThePower Manifesto for Change.

Its roots are in the developing field of community philanthropy, which includes a variety of locally based and close to home grantmaking organizations like community foundations, women’s funds, socio-environmental funds, human rights funds, community foundations, and other grassroots grantmakers. Recently, its influence has grown to encompass a wider range of supporters and activists from civil society who are working to create a “reimagined” system.

ShiftThePower is about mobilizing the demand side of systems change – and a vision of a “good society” – by modeling alternative practices and structures and by introducing fresh perspectives into the established development knowledge economy. It also advocates for change in the dominant system of international development.

Changemakers from all across the world will congregate in Bogotá, Colombia for the #ShiftThePower Summit in December 2023.

Who should submit a Fellow application?

The ideal but not required #ShiftThePower Fellows will be people working for a company that values and aspires to the same things as the #ShiftThePower movement.

While interested and eager to engage with people, weave ties, and strengthen networks, they will be rooted in practice in their area. By connecting and fostering solidarity and practice between and among activists, thought leaders, allies, and organizations – in a cooperative working model that draws from and is shaped by emergent practice and grassroots action – fellows will help weave the supportive architecture that will underpin the movement.

The Opportunity

The time commitment for fellows will be between 8 and 12 hours per month for nine months (August 2023 to April 2024). This will involve both autonomous work and routine sharing gatherings with fellows, coworkers at the GFCF, and individuals from other networks. Fellows will be passionate about collaborating with others, taking detailed notes, writing, blogging, using social media, and utilizing technology.

Associates will:

  • Accept the challenge of bringing about change in complicated systems and learning to live with ambiguity.
  • Breaking down huge ideas into commonplace tools, procedures, relationships, and plans requires conceptual thought and application.
  • Be energized by the prospect of confronting, investigating, and inventing new methods to work.
  • Stipends will be provided to fellows’ organizations or to unaffiliated individuals on a consulting basis, and they will receive mentorship and support from the GFCF and other participants in the #ShiftThePower campaign. At the conclusion of the Fellowship, Fellows will be expected to have created something that is related to their learning process and adds to the overall movement, whether it takes the form of a podcast, research, a report, blogs, etc.
