The Africa Platform of Ghent University Association Short Stay Research Fellowships 2023 are now accepting applications. Applications for visiting fellows are encouraged by the Ghent University Association’s (GAP) Africa Platform. GAP, one of Ghent University’s six regional platforms, promotes and facilitates academic cooperation between the Ghent University Association and educational institutions in Africa.

Each year, the Africa Platform welcomes five visiting research fellows. A minimum of two weeks must be spent at Ghent University or one of the affiliated University Colleges by award recipients. The fellowships are open for acceptance at any point in 2024. Award recipients are expected to attend Ghent University and participate in the research unit’s academic activities. At least one lecture or seminar will be presented by visiting scholars to other academics and students. As a result, recipients of the award must be fluent in either French or English.

Fellowship

The fellowships include a stipend of €1,000 plus one round-trip ticket for a minimum stay of two weeks, which is intended to pay for (or help defray the cost of) travel, lodging, and living expenses. This implies that additional financing will frequently be required; take note that they will only take into account additional research funding; they will not take into account personal resources.
The visiting scholars will receive an office and have access to resources (such the library) as a visiting scholar at Ghent University.

Eligibility

  • Open to postdoctoral researchers who are employed at African institutions of higher learning or basic research (junior or senior lecturers and professors).
  • Two groups of countries will be considered. Only applicants who are linked with colleges in Cluster 1 nations may apply in 2023.

Cluster 1 includes Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, DR Congo, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, the Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Libya, Mali, Mauretania, Morocco, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Sudan, Togo, Tunisia, Western Sahara;

Selection Standards

The selecting process will take into account the following factors:

  • The candidate’s resume and scientific accomplishments: 25%
  • The research plan’s inspiration, viability, and academic quality: 25%
  • 50% of applicants must meet the criteria for added value and sustainability (effect of the research stay on future departmental and institutional collaboration).
  • Priority will be given to new forms of partnership, which pertain to new initiatives with a new scope; as a result, candidates who haven’t had an opportunity to visit UGent in the past 12 months will receive preference.
  • Research that is interdisciplinary will be given preference.

Application

The portions of the application form that should be in either English or French are as follows:

individual data;

  • a cover letter in which you mention the duration of your visit, the research group you will be associated with, a justification of how a research stay in Ghent will advance your current and future studies at your home university, and whether your visit relates to a novel kind of partnership;
  • a research strategy (including goals, techniques, a schedule for the visit, potential long-term collaboration plans, interdisciplinarity of the study, etc.);
  • a budget


three of your most significant publications listed;
both of your signatures and the promotor from Ghent University. This means that at the application stage, you should already have a Ghent University promoter.

The online research directory might aid you in your quest for a promoter if you do not already have connections to Ghent University. A brief motivational remark from the Ghent University promoter is additionally required;
A brief CV (maximum 2 pages) and documentation of your PhD degree should be sent to the application.
