The WIPO Photography Prize also increases understanding of copyright among young participants and their communities, as well as the relationship between intellectual property rights and the preservation of traditional cultural expressions.

How We Wear Our Culture Is How We Tell Our Stories is the theme of the photography award.

Young people from Indigenous Peoples and nearby areas are requested to take and submit photos that convey an important message about their cultures’ clothing under the theme, “How We Wear Our Culture Is How We Tell Our Stories.”

The images might, for instance, show apparel that embodies both old designs that are still representative of the community’s cultural identity and current designs that are based on those designs. The attire could consist of items worn on a daily basis, fabrics, or formal attire. The term “clothing” also refers to accessories like jewelry, shoes, and headpieces.

Prizes

In addition to other prizes, winners will also get photography gear with a maximum retail value of:

  • CHF 3,500 for first place.
  • Place two: CHF 2,500
  • Place 3: CHF 1,500

Eligibility

  • Participants must be under 30 years old on the deadline for applications and must be a part of an Indigenous Peoples or local community in one of the 193 WIPO Member States. Participants under the age of majority (i.e., those under 18) must have permission from a legal guardian to participate.
  • The participants must have created the brief descriptions and taken the pictures themselves.
  • Images cannot have previously won prizes or recognition in another photography contest. Each participant may only submit one entry. Combination entries are prohibited.
  • The participant must, if necessary, obtain permission before using traditional knowledge and/or cultural expressions in the photograph. The image should not include any sensitive, secret, or sacred information.

Judgment Procedure

  • In other words, the use of professional or specialized equipment or the participants’ professional experience or background will not be taken into account when judging photographs on a technology-neutral basis.
  • The expression of the theme, originality, inventiveness, and artistic expression, inspirational power, visual appeal, and community-related impact are the evaluation criteria for applicants.
  • A shortlist of entries will be created by an external jury that will be appointed by WIPO, and then winners will be chosen. Internationally renowned Indigenous photographers and other experts on the subject will serve as the judges. The WIPO will examine the submitted submissions and make a determination regarding their compliance with all rules for the Photography Prize after consulting with the judges.
  • The full names of all accepted competitors, along with the images and other entry materials, may be published on the WIPO website and competition platform.
