The Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism 2023 is currently accepting applications. The prize’s objective is to honor excellent investigative journalism on subjects that are important to the European Union (EU) as a whole or to some of its Member States and that further the EU’s core values, as outlined in the European Charter of Human Rights.

As a memorial to the Maltese blogger and investigative journalist who was killed in a car bomb assault in 2017, the Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism was established on October 16, 2020. The Prize will be given out annually and was approved by the European Parliament in October 2020.

Prize

On October 20, 2023, at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, journalists or teams of journalists based in the European Union will receive the €20,000 yearly prize. An impartial jury will select the winning article.

Eligibility

  • Open to all professional journalists, whether they are working alone or in groups, regardless of nationality. Authors may submit applications on their own behalf or on their behalf of reputable media organizations and associations.
  • Between September 1, 2022, and July 31, 2023, entries must have appeared in print, audiovisual, or internet media outlets based in one of the 27 EU Member States.
  • The Prize’s official language is English. You can submit entries in any of the official EU languages. The submission form must include a synopsis in English with a word count restriction of 500.
  • There may be one or more authors for an entry. Participants must be the original creators of their works and the owners of the copyright and moral rights to them. Authors may submit applications on their own behalf or on their behalf of reputable media organizations and associations.
  • Any journalist or group of journalists who would like to take part may submit more than one entry. However, each entry requires a new application.
  • Disqualification will come from plagiarism, which is defined as the unauthorized use of another author’s words and ideas and the presenting of them as one’s own. The granted Prize will be revoked if plagiarism is subsequently discovered.

Evaluation Standards

The following criteria will be used to evaluate candidates:

  • Topic’s applicability to European society and contribution to the development of EU ideals.
  • Content quality: It should be well-researched, factual, accurate, and based on a range of sources.
  • linguistic, stylistic, and structural excellence.
  • An original and comprehensive approach to the subject.
