The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) Fellowship 2023 is now accepting applications. The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) honors scientific brilliance by electing to its membership excellent researchers who have acquired the highest level of distinction in their profession and have significantly aided the development of science both locally and internationally. A rigorous peer review procedure is used to elect AAS Fellows for life based on their outstanding publishing history, inventions, leadership qualities, and contributions to public policy and society.

There is no upper age limit, and the AAS encourages the nomination of talented academics from underrepresented fields as well as female scientists. Candidates from any of the ten AAS scientific clusters, which are: Agricultural & Nutritional Sciences; Biosciences; Chemical Sciences; Cultural Sciences, Humanities & Social Sciences; Geological, Environmental, Earth & Space Sciences; Materials Science; Mathematical Sciences; Medical & Health Sciences; Physical Sciences; and Policy Sciences, may be nominated.
Fellows, Associate Fellows, and Honorary Fellows are the three levels of acknowledgment offered by the AAS Fellowship.
Eligibility
- The applicant must have earned a PhD or an equivalent degree no less than ten years prior to the year of nomination and must have distinguished post-degree academic accomplishments.
- Give examples of the contributions you have made to Africa. Candidates for Associate Fellowship must also show that they have supervised a significant number of African master’s and doctorate students and that they have published papers based on their research in Africa, with a significant percentage of those publications having African first authors.
- Candidates must be currently engaged individuals; if not, it should be noted on the application what contribution they would make to The AAS.
- The nominee’s work must be exceptional in its field on the African continent and must display exceptional scientific quality.
- Show great scientific citizenship, leadership, and, if appropriate, policy-related contributions.
- Give examples of how you have been recognized by your peers in the field, such as active peer review of journal papers, involvement on scientific advisory boards, invitations to speak, awards, prizes, or affiliation with other academies or professional organisations.
- Publish with reputable publishers and in prestigious scientific journals with an H-index of 20 or higher on Scopus, Google Scholar, or Web of Science.
- Have at least one journal publication with 100 citations or more. possess the first authorship in a substantial number of publications.
Nomination
In the first part of every year, the African Academy of Sciences welcomes candidates for Fellows. All The AAS Fellows and Associate Fellows get a nomination call. Non-Fellows are also notified of the open call through notice. Nominations can only be made by current AAS Fellows and Associate Fellows.
Self-nomination is not permitted, however interested parties may ask a Fellow or Associate Fellow of AAS to put them forward. The phone line is active for two months.
