The Wikimedia Foundation Open the Knowledge Journalism Awards 2023 are now accepting applications. The Open the Knowledge Journalism Awards have been introduced for the first time by the Wikimedia Foundation to recognize the efforts of journalists in Africa who give diversity, equity, and inclusion a high priority in their reporting.

The prizes honor journalists for the crucial work they do in producing well-researched articles that volunteer editors can utilize as a starting point for new articles on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. Their effort contributes to expanding the knowledge base on one of the most popular websites in the world, making it more representative of the subjects, occasions, and figures that have shaped how people have understood culture and history over time.
African journalists working abroad are invited to submit pieces they have authored that contribute to the understanding of Africa.
Categories
Africa The following categories, which were selected with the assistance of Wikimedia contributors in Africa, are open to self-nominations from journalists based on the continent for articles they have produced.

Human Rights, Women, and Youth in the Digital Age
Award
- The winner of the first place prize will get US $2,000, a trophy, a certificate of appreciation, and the chance to attend Wikimedians’ Wiki Indaba conference in November 2023. The award winner will get the chance to discuss their experiences as a journalist and some of the potential and problems they see in their line of work while there.
- The winner of the second-place prize will get $1,500 USD and a certificate of appreciation.
- The Wikimedia Foundation will award Special Mentions to an extra four nominees, one in each category.
- The Wikimedia Foundation’s website and social media outlets will honor all honorees (including those who received special mentions) and their contributions.
Eligibility
- Journalists must have their primary residence on the African continent and be nationals of an African nation.
- Articles must be related to the award categories (mentioned below) and be about the African continent.
- Articles were supposed to be released between January 1 and June 23, 2023.
- Published articles should be in English.
- Your own original writing should be used in the pieces, along with in-depth analysis and/or investigative reporting.
- If you include a link or URL as confirmation that the piece was published, submissions will be simpler to review.
- Articles must be truthful and thoroughly researched, without attempting to mislead or misrepresent the truth. Articles that are objective and well-researched guarantee the accuracy of the data on Wikipedia.
- The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking articles that are written with the utmost respect for people since it upholds human rights. They are looking for journalists who uphold journalistic standards and act ethically.
- The Wikimedia Foundation encourages free knowledge access. Articles must therefore be made accessible for viewing without a paywall.
Application
To be eligible for this honor, you may submit as many articles as you desire. The same article cannot be submitted in more than one category, though. Select the category that most accurately describes the article’s content.
