According to Law 288/55 and its subsequent amendments and additions, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) offers grants to foreign nationals* and Italian nationals living abroad (IRE)** for the academic year 2023–2024 in order to promote international cooperation in cultural, scientific, and technological fields, to advance Italian language and culture, and to support Italy’s economic system abroad.

Grants are available to finish study courses and research/training programs in Italian educational institutions that are publicly funded or that are officially recognized.

Conditions for Eligibility

Academic requirements Only foreign and Italian students studying abroad (IRE)* who possess the necessary academic credentials to enroll in an Italian university or institute may submit an application (for more information, see https://studyinitaly.esteri.it/en/Recognition-of-Qualification) or click here

Age restrictions

  • Candidates for advanced courses in Italian language and culture, higher education in the arts, music, and dance (AFAM), and master’s degrees must be at least eighteen years old.
  • born after June 9, 1994, and not older than 28 years old before the deadline of this call, with renewals being the only exception.
  • With the exception of renewals, candidates for PhD programs must be at least 18 years old and not older than 30 at the time of application (born after June 9, 1992).
  • By the deadline of this call, applicants for research projects under academic supervision must be at least 18 years old and not older than 40 (born after June 9, 1982).
  • Scholarships are only available to do academic courses on Italian soil on-site.

Master’s Degree (2nd cycle of the Magistrale degree)
Grants for Master’s degree programs are given for study periods of 6 or 9 months.

  • In Italy, a Bachelor’s degree is required for entry into the first year of a Master’s program; those who demonstrate sufficient academic progress on their first year tests are admitted to the second year.
  • Please take note that enrolling in some Master’s (Laurea Magistrale) degree programs is only possible after passing admissions exams. It is strongly advised for applicants to confirm this and other prerequisites with the university of their choosing. Pre-enrollment may also be required using the website https://www.universitaly.it/.

Higher education programs in the arts, music, and dance (AFAM)

  • Grants for Higher Education in the Arts, Music, and Dance (AFAM) are given for study periods of 6 or 9 months.
  • Applicants must fulfill the entry requirements and academic requirements stipulated by the relevant Institute in order to be accepted into an Italian AFAM Institute.
  • Please Note: Enrollment in some AFAM courses is only possible after completing admissions exams. It is strongly advised for applicants to confirm this and any other prerequisites with the AFAM Institute of their choosing. Pre-enrollment may also be required using the website https://www.universitaly.it/.

PhD degree


  • Grants are given for research periods of six or nine months for PhD programs.
  • Candidates must fulfill the entry requirements and academic prerequisites provided by the University in order to be accepted to a PhD program in Italy.
  • They must also submit the PhD admission letter from the appropriate Italian university.

Academically supervised research initiatives (Progetti in co-tutela)

  • Grants for research projects under the direction of academics are given for study periods of 6 or 9 months.
  • Research projects at Italian research institutions (such as the Italian Research Council (CNR), the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS), the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF), and The Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), among others) as well as at public or recognized universities, museums, and archives may be funded with these grants.
  • Candidates must submit a research proposal together with their supervisor’s name, contact information, and acceptance letter from the host University or Institute.

Higher Education Initiative at WikiAfrica

African speakers of African languages who have received MAECI grants are given the chance to participate in the WikiAfrica Higher Education Initiative through a partnership with the Aurora Foundation. In order to provide specific information on Africa online, the initiative encourages students’ active participation. The Moleskine Foundation, the Wikimedia Foundation, and the Aurora Foundation collaborated to build the project.

Benefits

INSURANCE FOR HEALTH AND MEDICINE

In the event of an accident or illness, grantees will be protected by a group health and medical insurance that MAECI has contracted. Only while the grant is in effect is the insurance valid.

The recipient of an MAECI scholarship will receive a monthly sum of 900 euros paid periodically every two or three months to the personal current account opened in his or her name with an Italian banking institution, depending on the start date of the grant and the number of months indicated in the « Dichiarazione di assegnazione di borsa di studio » (Awarding Letter).

FINANCIAL PERIOD

Grant recipients can take use of the funding during a study period that begins on November 1st, 2023, and ends on October 31st, 2024.
