About the Organization (Sasakawa Health Foundation (SHF))
In order to eradicate Hansen’s disease, widely known as leprosy, from the world, Sasakawa Health Foundation (SHF) was founded in 1974 as Sasakawa Memorial Health Foundation. Its co-founders were Professor Morizo Ishidate (1901-1996), regarded as the father of chemotherapy for Hansen’s disease in Japan, and Mr. Ryoichi Sasakawa (1899-1995), the creator of The Nippon Foundation, who served as SHF’s first president.
