About the Organization

The German government’s contribution to international climate funding includes the International Climate Initiative (IKI), which is a significant component. The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), working together with the Federal Ministries of the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV), and the Federal Foreign Office (AA), has been implementing the IKI from 2022. The Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) rooted in the Paris Agreement are supported by the ministries together through the IKI in developing and emerging nations. Along with taking into account environmental, economic, and social concerns, this involves actions to maintain and repair natural carbon sinks as well as adapt to the effects of climate change. Additionally, the IKI aids its associate nations in accomplishing the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The fundamental IKI structure has been accepted by all three ministries. This covers the tools that support and validate the IKI’s principles and obligations, the numerous financing requests, and external communication.

Regarding the Grant

When the granted grants are disbursed, civil society organizations must have a registered office in Germany. This is supported by the IKI Medium Grants financing program. These organizations carry out initiatives to improve North-South cooperation for climate action, climate change adaptation, and biodiversity conservation with partner organizations from ODA1 eligible countries of implementation. The IKI Office of Zukunft – Umwelt – Gesellschaft (ZUG) gGmbH, a designated project management organization within the IKI, implements the IKI Medium Grants.

The goals of the IKI Medium Grants are to strengthen the capacities of implementing organizations and partners as well as other actors of civil society in the partner countries as knowledge carriers and implementation partners in the climate sector, to explore innovative bottom-up approaches to fulfilling the Paris Agreement and the CBD (with the hope that they will be adopted by other non-state actors), and to support the global networking of civil society between North and South. Thus, the initiative aims to support international networked cooperation on climate action, climate change adaptation, and biodiversity protection. It also aims to support the participation of civil society voices by partner governments in the transformation towards CO2 neutrality. The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV), and the Federal Foreign Office (AA) work closely together to implement the IKI.

Project’s goals are measured by:

According to this funding announcement, the Federal Government of Germany will provide grants for up to twelve projects with a maximum financing amount of EUR 8 million. Projects on one of the two funding priorities stated below are sought with the grant announcement: –

  • Initiative testing for regional decarbonization
  • Innovative pilot programs involving smallholders and cooperatives to support supply chains that avoid deforestation
  • Through sub-national climate partnerships between civil society, public administration, and relevant networks, the funded decarbonization pilot projects serve to move away from fossil fuels and climate-damaging applications and technologies in the areas of sustainable energy supply, energy efficiency, sector coupling, and sustainable mobility. As a result, they contribute to both the implementation and ambition raising of NDCs.
  • The EU Regulation on deforestation-free supply chains is implemented by the funded innovative pilot projects with smallholders and cooperatives to strengthen deforestation-free supply chains. These projects also support the objectives of the Paris Agreement and the CBD while enhancing the integrity and functionality of the impacted ecosystems.

The project measures support the Federal Government of Germany’s climate action goals as well as the progressive achievement of the IKI Medium Grants program objectives through their implementation focus. They also promote the imitation and execution of additional initiatives for combating climate change and conserving biodiversity.

The funding objective, project selection and implementation standards, and application process for the IKI Medium Grants financing program are all included in this funding announcement.

Goal of the Funding

The IKI Medium Grants are intended for civil society actors (implementing organizations) who can demonstrate that they have a physical location in Germany at the time the awarded grants are first granted. Measures to strengthen North-South cooperation for climate action, adaptation to climate change, and biodiversity protection are to be implemented in conjunction with local partner organizations (implementing partners) in chosen ODA-eligible countries of implementation. It is a clear goal of the IKI Medium Grants to strengthen both these transnational networks and the civil society entities they represent. IKI Medium Grants specifically encourage project activities that deal with creative bottom-up implementation of the Paris Agreement and Convention on Biological Diversity contributions. The following funding priorities serve this goal and are open to applications from interested parties with creative project ideas.

How to Apply:
