In order to support the upcoming generation of African leaders, former US President Barack Obama established the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). Statistics show that strong, results-oriented leaders are needed because nearly one in three Africans are under the age of 24 and that 60% of the continent’s population is under 35.

14 nations in East and Central Africa are served by the YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa, which is based at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya: Burundi, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. Deloitte East Africa is in charge of the Center, which also has support from an increasing number of regional and international partners.

Selected participants will take part in leadership development programs in three study areas—business and entrepreneurship, civic leadership, and public management—over the course of four residential weeks. These programs will emphasize communication, innovation, and teamwork as well as individual and team leadership skills. The program places a strong emphasis on experiential and interactive learning, which encourages each participant’s capacity to participate both independently and collaboratively.

Online education has also been established by YALI RLC EA. Our program calendar has been affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic, which has disturbed life worldwide. How the COVID-19 situation plays out will determine whether we can continue to conduct our residential cohorts. Even more members of our target demographics will have the chance to participate in the YALI RLC EA experience thanks to the Center’s online cohort, which will allow us to enroll more participants (more than 100 per cohort). This will help us advance with our mission of empowering young people. The mobile phone accessibility and user-friendliness of the web platform. On May 18, 2020, the first online cohort with 250 participants got started.

Requirements

Young East African leaders that fit the following requirements are eligible to compete for the YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa, which is merit-based.

  • Are nationals and inhabitants of one of the following countries, and between the ages of 18 and 35 at the time the application is submitted. Central African Republic, Burundi. Tanzania, Uganda, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo,
  • neither citizens nor lawful permanent residents of the United States.
  • Are capable of reading, writing, hearing, and speaking English, and Are eligible to get any required visa for Kenya.

Selection Standards

  • YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa participants will be chosen through an open competition based on merit. A selection panel will examine each eligible application. Before a final decision is made and an invitation to join the program is sent, chosen semi-finalists will be interviewed.

The following factors will be used by selection panels to assess applications:

  • a track record of leadership in business, entrepreneurship, or civic action.
  • Active participation in volunteerism, mentoring, or public or community service.
  • the capacity to respect others’ perspectives and cooperate in a variety of groups.
  • solid interpersonal and communication abilities.
  • a vibrant, upbeat outlook.
  • knowledge, interest, and expertise in the chosen area or career route, as well as
  • a promise to use what you’ve learned about leadership to help your country and/or community after the program.
