In order to address the shortage of highly trained specialists in the disciplines of applied sciences, engineering, and technology (ASET) and to improve the research and innovation capacities in those areas in SSA, Rsif seeks to train top-notch PhD students and post-doctoral researchers. By offering money through competitive grants, Rsif additionally supports the development of research and innovation ecosystems at particular African Host Universities (AHU). Five Priority Thematic Areas supported by Rsif include teaching, research, and innovation are:

Food security and agribusiness, minerals, mining, and materials engineering, (4) Energy, including renewables, (5) Climate change, and ICT, especially big data and artificial intelligence.

The following are the specific goals of Rsif:

  • Find and support young, brilliant Africans who want to pursue further education in ASET subjects where knowledge is most required.
  • Address the disparities in the representation of women and underrepresented groups in ASET fields across Africa.
  • Increase the capacity of African universities to offer pertinent ASET training and to secure ongoing investment in expanding ASET education and workforce.
  • The PhD Scholarship lasts for three to four years and includes six to twelve months of “sandwich” training at a foreign partner university, research facility, or for-profit organization.
