The Africa Institute is accepting submissions for the fourth cohort of the Global Africa Translation Fellowship for the year 2024 as part of its African Languages and Translation Program.

For a grant of up to $5,000 to finish translations of works from the African continent and its diaspora into English or Arabic, the fellowship is accepting applications from all around the Global South. The non-residential fellowship enables the recipient scholar to finish the project other than at The Africa Institute. (Sharjah, UAE). The fellowship’s objective is to increase global readership of significant texts in African and African Diaspora studies.

Funding

  • Depending on the caliber and scope of the project, the fellowship awards funding in the range of $1,000 to $5,000.

Eligibility

  • All applicants from the Global South are welcome to apply.
  • Complete translations of works from the African continent and its diaspora into English or Arabic should be the focus of grant requests.
  • Retranslations of antiquated classic literature, untranslated works, collections of poetry, prose, or critical theory are all examples of projects that may be chosen.
  • The project could be in progress or brand-new, provided it can be finished within the grant’s period.

Selection Process

  • The faculty and research colleagues of The Africa Institute will evaluate each application.
  • Applicants will be selected for awards based on the strength of their proposals and their prior track records of successfully completing projects. The award money will be split in two equal portions. The first half of the payment is to be transferred at the beginning of the project, and the second half is to be transferred at its conclusion.
  • For preservation purposes solely, the Africa Institute requests getting a copy of the translation. Unless otherwise agreed upon with the awardee, the translation will not be made public or used for any other reasons.

Application for Global Africa Translation Fellowship 2024 (up to $5000)

Applications need to contain:
  • a two-page CV/résumé that details your institution’s affiliation, educational background, including the highest degree you have earned, and significant works you have published or created
  • a two-page overview of the translation project to be done during the fellowship time, together with arguments for its significance, any plans for a re-translation, and estimated completion dates. A fresh project that falls within the grant’s period or a work-in-progress are both acceptable options.
  • 4-5 pages (double-spaced), including both the original text and translation.
  • An explanation of the copyright standing of the work Please provide a copy of the copyright notice from the original text and a letter from the copyright holder confirming that English language rights to the work are available if the work is not in the public domain.
  • Applications must be sent in a single PDF file that contains a statement, sample, copyright status (if applicable), and CV, in that sequence. The file should be named LASTNAME-FIRSTNAME.pdf and contain the applicant’s name in that manner. Send a PDF as an email attachment to translation@theafricainstitute.org using the same name as the email subject line (LASTNAME-FIRSTNAME application).
