  • They are flexible in nature and depend on the interests of both the intern and the IOM Country Office.

Does an internship pay me?

There are a few exceptions to the rule that most interns receive a monthly subsistence allowance (MSA), which is a financial stipend to help with housing and living costs. For instance, when an intern receives financing or a scholarship from their university, the government, or another organization, or when IOM has a contract with a university to provide internship projects to its students as part of their coursework. The MSA for interns who live in the area may, under extraordinary circumstances, be waived by the director of human resources.

Will I have health insurance while I’m doing my internship?

  • Regardless of the location of the assignment, interns are protected against occupational diseases and accidents under the Organization’s Compensation Plan (CP) insurance.
  • All interns who are not citizens of the nation in which their duty station is located are required to provide documentation of current medical insurance that includes evacuation and repatriation coverage and covers the entire internship.
  • Locally hired interns who are citizens of the nation where their duty station is located must also provide documentation of current health insurance that covers the entire internship. Note: Interns hired locally are not obliged to have evacuation and repatriation insurance.
  • Prior to the start of the internship, all interns are required to provide a medical certificate attesting to their excellent health and copies of their immunization records.
