The Halcyon Food & Agtech in Africa Intensive Fellowship 2023 is currently accepting applications. Halcyon Fellowships provide training in Investment Readiness, Business Basics, Impact, and Leadership to MVP-stage founders who are focused on making a positive impact.

The African-focused Halcyon fellowship is intended for businesspeople with creative ideas that help boost farmers’ livelihoods while extending access to wholesome food for the most needy. The businesses that are disrupting the food and agricultural industries are the focus of this fellowship. Fellows will benefit from a variety of programs, access to advisers and mentors, and more because of their partners at Amazon Web Services, S&R Evermay, and HR Sage! Three virtual meetings, a one-week in-person residency at Halcyon, and a one-week in-person residency in Nairobi will make up the hybrid delivery method for the programming.

Eligibility

For consideration for this fellowship, you must:

  • Must reside in or have a business location in an African Union nation.
  • The applicant must be the venture’s CEO and/or have overall authority over the strategic direction, growth, and management of the business.
  • Must be able to dedicate themselves to working on the project full-time during the residence phases (August 21-25, 2023 in DC and November 13-17, 2023 in Nairobi).
  • Must be able to travel to Washington, DC, and Nairobi for monthly meetings and residency activities.
  • must speak English well.
  • By the time the program begins, participants must be at least 21 years old.
  • You may submit an application on your own or with up to one Co-Founder who satisfies the aforementioned criteria.
  • Must be prepared to support the expansion and improvement of Halcyon’s neighboring neighborhood.

To qualify for this fellowship, your endeavor must:

  • It must be the applicant’s own thought (s).
  • Your business must be in the food or agricultural industries.
  • Minimum Viable Product (MVP) stage is required.
  • Must be a stand-alone business endeavor without any control from an established institution.
  • Must have a sustainable company model in place with plans to market a key good or service to generate income.
  • It must be a for-profit or hybrid business with the primary goal of bringing about demonstrable changes to the social or environmental conditions.
  • Possibly not a 501(c)(3) non-profit endeavor.

Selection Standards

  • Impact:Winning candidates show that their venture has a major impact as a central component. They consider impact in terms of how scalable the strategy is to disseminate this influence as well as how influential the main product or service is.
  • Problem/Solution: Does your business recognize a significant issue with a workable solution? Good applications clearly and concisely explain a problem and lay out a solution to the problem.
  • Sustainability: They are searching for creative social enterprises that market a core good or service in order to make a difference.
  • Execution: Get off to a good start with the application, which serves as our initial introduction. Successful candidates have a broad vision and are meticulous in their attention to detail.
  • Innovation: What distinguishes your approach to a problem from existing ones? What makes you unique? They prize bold concepts that upend the existing quo and address the problems of the twenty-first century. Aim high!
  • Talent: Do you possess the necessary skills to guide your business to success? Vision, intelligence, resilience, and follow-through are traits of great leadership that stand out in strong applicants.
