Deadline for Submissions: March 29, 2023 | Future of MFP Ricoh “MIRAI” Challenge
Leading Japanese electronics and image business Ricoh is holding a competition for entrepreneurs and students. Participants are invited to submit their ideas for redesigning the idea of the multi-functional printer and peripheral from both a conventional and modern perspective as part of the Ricoh “MIRAI” Competition – The Future of MFP.
There are three application categories for this contest:
- Develop a solution that capitalizes on the demand for paper in contemporary fields and businesses.
- Alternatives for a paperless society: How should printers and scanners change if not for physical printing in order to remain useful in the workplace?
- Wild Card: Regardless of category, the development of original or novel solutions to forge a potential future alliance with Ricoh.
- Ricoh is looking for ground-breaking concepts that can challenge the established definition of the “multifunctional printer” and foresee its potential future iterations.

In order to rethink the idea of the multi-functional printer, RICOH wants to work with creatives to create solutions.
- Several of our conventional businesses and ways of working have changed as a result of the increasingly digitized and electronic-first world we now live in. Yet, there is still a need for physical materials in important sectors including medicine, law, procurement, and the creative industries.
- Do we embrace a purely digital world, or are there still uses for tangible objects and settings?
- In order to challenge the idea of the conventional “multifunctional printer” and to envision potential future modifications, Ricoh is asking for creative solutions and ideas.
- Do you hope to alter the current state of affairs about paper or perhaps to use both new and old technology to improve a world without paper?
- To present your solution to Ricoh executives, submit an application right away. Each member of the winning student team will get a high-end digital compact camera, and the winning firm may receive cash support to construct a Proof of Concept.

Online on Zoom, the Ricoh “MIRAI” Challenge – Future of MFP final showcase will be held. Prior to the competition, judges and competitors will each have one online dry run.
Voting Period 1, March 30, 2023–April 17, 2023
The following criteria will be used to choose entries:
- Value of the concerns addressed: Is there a genuine market need to address the issue in question? How many people is it affecting?
- Innovativeness of the business model and technology: How innovative are the business model and the technology being used? What makes it different from others?
- Possibility (short-term: in the next one to two years, or long-term: ten years from now): How practical is the proposed solution for implementation? Is the solution economically sound? Would the proposed solution endure in the long run?
- Impact: How big could the societal impact be? How extensive is the effect? How many individuals will be impacted by your solution? How substantial is the effect?
- There will be 30 shortlisted teams. Results will be made public on April 17, 2023. (18 April at the latest).
- 18 April 2023 – 15 May 2023: Interview screening
The first vote phase’s 30 chosen teams will be interviewed online. In order to prepare for the final event on May 31st, 2023, 10 of these teams will be chosen as finalists and mentored for two weeks starting on May 15, 2023.
- Results will be made public on May 15, 2023. (16 May at the latest).
- 16 May – 26 May 2023: mentoring
- To prepare for the final event at the end of May, the 10 teams will receive mentoring for two weeks starting on May 16, 2023.
- To help them prepare for the final event, the 10 finalist teams will be matched with Ricoh mentors on the platform.
Timeline
- Period of Application: 1 February 2023 – 29 March 2023
- After creating an account, startups should upload a 10-page PPT/PDF on “My Page,” which summarizes the responses and ideas/proposals in the form, outlining genuine existing solutions using technology to tackle the theme challenges. Each student must turn in a 5-page idea or proposal.
- Voting Phase 1: March 30, 2023 to April 17, 2023
- Through online interviews, the Ricoh Judges team will choose 30 teams to advance to the next phase. The project will be presented for ten minutes, and then there will be a 20-minute Q&A period with the judges. Participants in the interview screening round must be chosen teams.
- Screening interviews from 18 April to 15 May 2023
- The first vote phase’s 30 chosen teams will be interviewed online. Ten of them will be chosen as finalists.
- Mentoring: May 16–May 26, 2023
- To prepare for the final event at the end of May, the 10 teams will receive mentoring for two weeks starting on May 16, 2023. To help them prepare for the final event, the 10 finalist teams will be matched with Ricoh mentors on the platform.
- Finale: May 31, 2023
- The final judging committee, which will be composed of Ricoh executives and management level staff, will hear from the 10 finalists’ teams online during a 5-minute pitch and an 8-minute Q&A session. The winners will be declared right away.
