Scholarships for African-based healthcare professionals from the 2023 African Palliative Care Association

March 22, 2023 is the deadline for submissions. | The 2023 African Palliative Care Association Scholarships

A small number of competitive scholarships are awarded to healthcare professionals each year by the African Palliative Care Association (APCA), in collaboration with Global Partners in Care (GPIC) in the USA, particularly nurses, social workers, physiotherapists, music therapists, and clinical officers.

The APCA and GPIC acknowledge the crucial role that social workers and healthcare professionals play in providing comprehensive palliative care services. Despite this, there is still a problem with the inadequate integration of palliative care into pre-service (undergraduate) training for healthcare and social workers, the absence of a clear career path for those who want to specialize in palliative care, and the lack of recognition of palliative care credentials by local ministries of health and education.

The goal of the Palliative Care Education Scholarship Fund is to give health care and social workers who are involved in providing palliative care or who are motivated to take the lead in the development of such services in their settings the chance to pursue specialized training. Health care and social workers frequently feel unable to handle the complex challenges that palliative care includes, despite the fact that it is a rising field of practice in Africa. In order to work effectively in palliative care with patients, families, healthcare professionals, and the community, training opportunities are expected to improve the skills, knowledge, attitudes, values, methodologies, and sensibilities required.

Eligibility:

  • Qualified nurses, social workers, clinical officers, physiotherapists, and music therapists who reside and work in Africa and hold degrees or diplomas in these fields.
  • Has been granted admission to a palliative care program at a school in Africa that is approved by the APCA. To be eligible for a scholarship, you must already have received acceptance or admission to a palliative care program of study at an accredited training facility.
  • Currently holding a health care worker or social worker license and registration with the appropriate professional organization in the applicant’s country.
  • Able to enroll in the course with the full backing of your employer.
  • Capable of serving your place of employment for at least a year after completing the training.
  • Able to fill out the application in either English or French legibly.
  • Willing to participate in a Zoom interview with GPIC and APCA, update the scholarship fund during your studies, or submit a video testimonial in support of future fundraising efforts.
  • Please be aware that applicants who are in their final year of study are given precedence.
  • Any accredited institution of higher learning that provides palliative care training in Africa may serve as the host institution. Examples include Hospice Africa and the Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care in Africa. Uganda, Mildmay Uganda, Nairobi Hospice, University of Cape Town, Malawi University, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, Kenya Medical Training, Center for Palliative Care in Nigeria.

All levels of study in the field of palliative care are eligible for consideration for scholarships.

Target audience: Personnel who want to pursue specialized training in palliative care, including nurses, social workers, clinical officers, physiotherapists, and music therapists. Consideration may be given to additional multidisciplinary palliative care team members.
