A charitable trust is the Muljibhai Madhvani Foundation. Maintaining and advancing scientific and technological education among Ugandans is one of the Foundation’s core goals. (The Madhavani Foundation Scholarship Programme 2023)
In order to advance the capacity-building of Ugandans in scientific and technical education, the Board of Trustees of the Foundation established a Scholarship Committee and launched a scholarship program in 2003.
The scholarship program is intended to assist Ugandans enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs at Ugandan universities.
The scholarship program has been running since the academic year 2003–2004.

What is does the scholarship cover?
For undergraduate students, the scholarship only covers the second year of tuition and beyond; for graduate students, the scholarship covers the whole program of study from the moment of application/award.
The type of scholarship
- The scholarship will be is a gift that the beneficiaries would pay directly to the university or institution.
- Receiving positive success reports from the faculty, institute, or school of the beneficiaries is a requirement for funding renewal.
- Retakes in more than one subject would result in the revocation of the scholarship, and the Trust will not provide financial support.
- The recipients of the awards are expected to make voluntary contributions to the Foundation after their studies are finished in order to support future scholars.
Who may submit an application for funding?
- For students who have finished their first year of college and are receiving undergraduate funding.
- For Post Graduate Funds Students who have finished their undergraduate studies and want to pursue a master’s.
- Students who had a retake in any subject during their first year of study or who had a CGPA below 3.0 are ineligible to apply.
- Students who already have a sponsorship are inneligible?
What academic fields qualify?
The Sponsorship will be for the following disciplines:
Agriculture, biology, chemistry, actuarial science, architecture, dentistry, commerce, hotel management, pharmacy, nursing, information technology, food science & technology, environment, and medicine.
Nonetheless, the Board retains the discretion to periodically update this list to reflect the relative weight assigned to each subject within the larger context of strengthening national capacity.
What are the criteria for selection?
- For undergraduate applicants, proof of successful completion of the first year of study is necessary, and for postgraduate applicants, proof of acceptance into a degree or postgraduate program at an accredited university or institution of higher learning in Uganda is required.
- Academic performance: Among the factors to be considered in choosing the successful applicants are the applicants’ cumulative grade point average (CGPA), class of degree, and academic references. The better, the greater one’s CGPA.
- Both the applicant’s age and character will be taken into account.
- To determine their respective financial needs, the financial situation of the candidates themselves, their parents, relatives, and/or spouses will be carefully examined. Please do not apply if you are already sponsoring students through another organization.
- The Scholarship Committee has been given discretionary authority by the Board of Trustees to evaluate the candidates and choose those who should be sponsored. Where there is fierce competition, the Committee may utilize other criteria like gender, regional balance, and disability.
- Postgraduate applicants will have an advantage in receiving scholarships if they have job experience in the relevant subject of study.
- Any information submitted by the applicant may be checked and verified by the Foundation.
- Canvassing in any form will result in immediate disqualification.
