The World Trade Organization (WTO) Essay Award 2023 is currently accepting applications. The award seeks to strengthen ties between the academic community and the WTO while fostering top-notch research on international trade cooperation and trade policy.
Mathilde Muoz of the James M. and Cathleen D. Stone Center on Wealth and Income Inequality at the University of California, Berkeley is the recipient of the 2022 WTO Essay Award for Young Economists. The Selection Panel gave her paper, “Trading Non-Tradables: The Implications of Europe’s Job Posting Policy,” the top rating.

Prize
The winner(s) of the yearly WTO Essay Award receive a cash award of CHF 5,000. If a paper is co-authored, the prize will be split equally between the authors.
The largest conference devoted to international trade, the European Trade Study Group (ETSG) annual meeting, will be where the winning paper is formally announced. The award presentation will take place at the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom from September 14–16, 2023. The meeting’s expenses will be covered for the winning author.
Eligibility for 2023 WTO Essay Award for Young Economists | United Nations
The topic of the essay must be trade policy and global trade cooperation.
The author(s) of the paper must hold a PhD or be working toward one, and if over 30, they must not have completed their PhD defense more than two years ago. This criterion shall apply to all authors of coauthored papers.
Essays must not be more than 15,000 words to be eligible for the award.
Application
The deadline for essays is June 2, 2023. By June 16, 2023, the WTO Secretariat’s Economic Research and Statistics Division will shortlist the admissible papers, and by July 7, 2023, the selection panel will make its decision. Only the essay’s author(s) will know if it is shortlisted.

The essay’s CV of the author(s) includes information on their current affiliations, the university where they received their PhD, when they hope to receive it, and their birthdate (s).
