The AKO Caine Prize for African Writing is a yearly short story award. The prize is granted for a short story by an African writer published in English, whether they live in Africa or elsewhere – THE AKO CAINE PRIZE 2022 FOR AFRICAN WRITING – 10000 Euros
Application final date: 31st January 2022 at midnight (GMT)
The winner is rewarded a cash prize of Euro10, 000 and the other four short listed writers will get Euro500 each.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
The story must have been produced in the five years preceding ‘the submissions deadline. For 2022 eligibility, the judges will only observe work published after 31st January 2017
Stories less than 3,000 words or above 10,000 words are not eligible for the prize
Publishers must get consent from the writer(s) before submitting their stories for the prize
Stories given in for the prize must have been published in English. Translated stories will be acceptable, given that the applicant provides an English translation.
Stories that have been previously presented for the Caine Prize are not eligible.
Categories not eligible for submission are stories for children, factual writing, play scripts and autobiography (biography)
Short stories must be presented by a publisher including publishers of physical and digital literary journals or magazines. Self-published and unpublished writings or stories are not accepted.
Your Submissions must confirm to what African country you come from and also mention your the word count.
Publishers are encouraged to give in multiple short stories as long as they do not present more than one story by the similar author.
