AKU GSMC Media Innovation Centre Innovators in Residence Program 2021/2022 for East African media innovators. ( $20,000 in grant funding)

The AKU GSMC Media Innovation Centre, together with its partners Media Challenge Initiative and DW Akademie are looking for the most creative and best media minds from the following countries Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya to join the 2021-2022 Innovators in Residence program, a twelve month incubation and accelerator program that gives training, mentoring and coaching to media innovators in East Africa. Want to make sure innovators from both rural and urban areas get access to the above program and for this reason, A special track for rural innovators will be included in this year’s cohort.
The AKU GSMC wishes to support innovators that are working on ideas that encourage and advocate for journalism in rural communities in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. Specifically, AKU GSMC are in search of media solutions that better acess to information, potentially low connectivity, limited acess to professional news media and low literacy rates and public dialogue and inclusion for rural communities in consideration of the great linguistic diversity.
Innovators working from the outside cities listed below are highly encouraged to apply:

Eligibility Needs
Innovators working in pre formed teams or those applying individually but are ready to team up for this programme. Innovators can apply only in teams of 2 to 5 members.
- Applications must be submitted in English. Projects producing matter in any East African language are welcome to apply.
- Participants have to be exceeding 18 years of age.
- Media innovators from Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. Mostly Journalists and innovators found in rural areas are encouraged to apply.
- Welcomed are projects that address journalism and media problems rather than storytelling. Projects and apps that support journalists and existing media houses in their work are invited to apply.
Innovators that are urban based are also highly encouraged to apply as we have slots for them as well.
The 9 winning teams, 1 from Kenya, 4 from Uganda and 4 from Tanzania will join the programme for a time of 12 months and get the benefits below to transform their ideas into sucessful products.
