Professor Hadfield, the Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of AI Alignment and Governance, is known for her innovative work on designing legal and regulatory systems to align AI technologies with human values. As a communications lead for her lab, the successful candidate will play a central role in amplifying the impact of this work to diverse audiences including policymakers, academics, journalists, and the public. About the Role This full-time position offers an exciting opportunity to develop and implement high-level communication strategies for a globally recognized research program focused on the ethical and technical challenges of artificial intelligence. The Communications Associate will be responsible for crafting clear, compelling narratives that reflect the scope and significance of Professor Hadfield’s research across multiple channels including social media, blogs, op-eds, policy briefs, and white papers. The successful candidate will also act as a liaison with external media outlets and AI policy stakeholders to ensure that cutting-edge insights are communicated in a timely and impactful way. This role is ideal for individuals with a passion for emerging technology, policy, and public impact communications. Key Responsibilities Strategic Communication and Stakeholder Engagement Develop and implement a comprehensive communications plan to promote Professor Hadfield’s work in AI safety, governance, and alignment. Identify and build relationships with key stakeholders in AI policy and research communities. Monitor trends and emerging issues in AI governance and ensure content relevance and strategic responsiveness. Content Creation and Dissemination Produce high-quality communications materials tailored to diverse audiences—ranging from policymakers to the general public. Translate complex, technical research into engaging written content including social media campaigns, blog posts, articles, and public-facing research summaries. Draft and edit op-eds, policy briefs, and white papers that articulate actionable insights from ongoing research. Media and Outreach Coordination Engage with journalists, podcast producers, and media representatives to amplify key messages and secure media placements. Promote public events, academic talks, and media appearances. Maintain digital presence through web updates and newsletter campaigns. Internal Collaboration and Project Management Work closely with Professor Hadfield and the research team to ensure consistency between messaging and research goals. Manage timelines and editorial workflows for communication campaigns. Coordinate with external vendors, designers, and partners as needed. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as communications, public policy, journalism, or a related area. Minimum of five years of experience in a communications role with demonstrated success in public outreach, strategic communications, or content production. Strong editorial skills and ability to tailor messaging to different audiences and platforms. Familiarity with content management systems (e.g., WordPress), email marketing platforms (e.g., Mailchimp), and standard design tools. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree or professional certification in AI policy, digital communication, or science communication. Background in AI governance frameworks (e.g., OECD AI Principles, NIST RMF, AI Bill of Rights). Experience collaborating with academic, nonprofit, or governmental organizations in science or tech policy domains. Strong project management experience and a demonstrated ability to balance multiple priorities under tight deadlines. Technical Skills Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace tools. Working knowledge of website and social media analytics tools. Advanced writing and content marketing expertise. Intermediate knowledge of media monitoring, editing, and event planning. About Professor Hadfield’s Work Professor Hadfield leads interdisciplinary efforts to address the alignment problem in AI—ensuring AI systems operate in ways consistent with human norms, values, and governance structures. She collaborates closely with computer scientists, economists, policymakers, and ethicists. This position provides a unique opportunity to contribute to the public-facing impact of that work. Compensation and Work Environment Salary range: $73,300–$128,300 annually (Targeted: $85,000, commensurate with experience). Location: Hybrid schedule based in either Baltimore, MD or Washington, DC.
