Strengthening Community Journalism and Human Rights Advocacy in Northern Nigeria (SCOJA) Fellowship 2026

Applications are open for the Strengthening Community Journalism and Human Rights Advocacy in Northern Nigeria (SCOJA) Fellowship 2026. With the goal of selling accountability for human rights violations in rural contexts and domestically-led options to varied gaps in Northern Nigeria, the Fellowship will empower neighborhood journalists with strategies to enhance hyperlocal reporting and advocacy.

They are concentrating on neighborhood journalists and advocates in Benue, Niger, Nasarawa, Plateau, Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, Kaduna and Kano states.  The Fellowship will include a 3-day coaching held in 3 focal states, Kaduna, Plateau and Borno and a 6-month submit-coaching interval for fellows to supply tales and interact in advocacy actions.

Training matters will embrace, however aren’t restricted to:

  • Human rights and advocacy
  • Digital security and bodily safety for journalists and activists 
  •  Techniques for reporting on SGBV
  • Accountability reporting and investigative journalism 
  • Climate Change Reporting and Advocacy
  • Conflict-sensitive reporting  
  • Collaborating with CBOs, authorities representatives and improvement companions
  • Solutions reporting 
  • Inclusive storytelling 
  • Data-driven journalism and civic engagement
  • Approaches to Mobilising and Inspiring Action
  • Countering misinformation and disinformation in numerous contexts
  • Press freedom and navigating authorized challenges

Eligibility

Open to:

  • Journalists and advocates whose work focuses on particular communities, cities or states.
  • Journalists and advocates who reside in any of the goal states.
  • Journalists and advocates with a robust curiosity in neighborhood-led change and stakeholder engagement.
  • Journalists and advocates who’re prepared to commit to six-months of constant engagement in the Fellowship, producing reviews and partaking with numerous stakeholders.
  • Women are extremely inspired to apply.

Expectation of Fellows

  • Commitment to attend a 3-day coaching in any of the focal states (Kaduna, Borno and Plateau).
  • Monthly reviews on actions improvement/execution for six months. 
  • At least 3 reviews and 1 vital advocacy initiative produced through the Fellowship 
  • Participation in all surveys, knowledge assortment actions and digital classes.
  • Step-down coaching to colleagues in their respective organisations.
