Building on the success of its 2024 version, the Online School on Human Rights returns in 2025 with a renewed dedication to exploring and advancing crucial understanding of basic rights in Europe. This 12 months’s theme—“Rights in Europe: The Risks and Impact of Authoritarianism”—addresses the challenges posed by authoritarian tendencies, democratic backsliding, and political repression throughout the continent and past.

Organized collaboratively by Ghent University’s Eureast Platform, the Irish Centre for Human Rights (University of Galway), the Elena Bonner School of Human Rights, and new companions Uppsala University and the University of Groningen, this interdisciplinary program brings collectively main students and practitioners to analyze and focus on the current and future of human rights in advanced political contexts.

Why Join the Online School?

The 2025 program goals to equip a brand new era of authorized and coverage professionals, students, and human rights defenders with a nuanced understanding of the regional human rights panorama and the instruments to advocate successfully inside it. The curriculum spans crucial modern points, together with:

  • The relationship between authoritarianism and human rights safety

  • Digital rights, surveillance, and freedom of expression in the digital age

  • Gendered impacts of geopolitics and authoritarian governance

  • Climate justice and the shrinking civic area

  • The misuse of human rights rhetoric by authoritarian regimes

  • Crisis governance: states of emergency, battle, and accountability

  • Tools for grassroots advocacy and transnational solidarity

Program Structure

  • Duration: 6 weeks

  • Total Hours: 30 tutorial hours (equal to three ECTS, topic to recognition by your home establishment)

  • Delivery Mode: Online, by way of interactive classes

  • Language: English

  • Format:

    • 11 dwell lectures and workshops led by consultants from high European establishments

    • Collaborative, mentored group tasks culminating in displays

    • Networking and peer alternate throughout various geographical and tutorial backgrounds

Certification

Participants who attend at the least 10 classes and full the group undertaking will obtain a joint certificates from the 5 associate establishments. The program is accredited for 3 ECTS credit, relying on your home college’s coverage.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Enrolled in a BA or MA program in regulation, political science, worldwide relations, or associated disciplines

  • Passionate about human rights, democracy, and worldwide governance

  • Open to college students from Europe, the Caucasus, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and Central Asia

  • Motivated to interact in collaborative, cross-cultural dialogue and tutorial analysis
