About the Project: RETIREWEL
This analysis is part of “Retirement across countries: A tripartite analysis of the welfare state, family care networks, and the retirement industry” (RETIREWEL), led by Dr. Dora Sampaio. RETIREWEL explores how older adults right this moment retire throughout nations and how this impacts household networks, welfare programs, and international care industries.
This PhD monitor will give attention to retirement trajectories between the UK and India, utilizing ethnographic and qualitative fieldwork. You will be a part of a dynamic crew investigating retirement migration throughout three migration corridors:

Netherlands–Turkey

United Kingdom–India
Your Role
As a PhD candidate, you’ll:

Develop a fieldwork and analysis plan
-
Conduct eight months of fieldwork in the UK and India
-
Write a paper-based dissertation inside 4 years
-
Collaborate with fellow researchers on publications and occasions
-
Present your findings in workshops, conferences, and seminars
-
Contribute to the undertaking’s collective objectives by way of teamwork and shared actions
Essential Qualifications
-
Master’s diploma in Human Geography, Anthropology, Sociology, or associated interdisciplinary fields (e.g., Migration or Development Studies)

Experience in qualitative and ethnographic analysis

Strong writing and analytical expertise
-
Familiarity with subjects like migration, transnationalism, ageing, or life-course research
-
Fluency in English (spoken & written)

(Desirable) Knowledge of an Indian language equivalent to Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi, or Malayalam

Strong interpersonal and organizational expertise
Residency Requirement
This place requires residency in the Netherlands, ideally in or close to Utrecht, throughout the PhD interval (excluding fieldwork phases).

Duration: 1 yr preliminary contract, prolonged to 4 years upon optimistic analysis
