UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development 2025 ($50,000 prize)

Applications are open for the UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development 2025. The prize seeks to reward distinctive initiatives and programmes undertaken by establishments, organizations or different entities within the subject of schooling for sustainable growth (ESD).

The Prize and award winners acknowledge the function of schooling in connecting the social, financial, cultural and environmental dimensions of sustainable growth. It was established by the Executive Board of UNESCO at its 195th session throughout the framework of the Global Action Programme (GAP) on ESD and formally introduced on the UNESCO World Conference on ESD (10-12 November 2014, Aichi-Nagoya, Japan).

Award

  • The three laureates of the Prize will obtain an award of US $50,000 every.

Eligibility

Nominees

  • Institutions, organizations or different entities engaged in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) may be nominated.
  • Nominations should focus on a particular ESD challenge or programme of the nominee, assembly the eligibility standards.

Nominator

  • Nominations may be submitted to the Director-General of UNESCO by Governments of Member States by way of their Permanent Delegation to UNESCO, and by Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in official partnership with UNESCO. Each Permanent Delegation or NGO could make as much as three nominations for any version of the Prize.
  • Self-nominations usually are not accepted.

Evaluation Criteria

The challenge/programme of the nominee are assessed by the Jury on the idea of the next standards:

  • Transformation: The challenge/programme practices Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) as transformative schooling in assist of sustainable growth, resulting in particular person and social change.
  • Integration: The challenge/programme addresses the three dimensions of sustainable growth (society, financial system, atmosphere) in an built-in manner.
  • Innovation: The challenge/programme demonstrates an revolutionary strategy to ESD.

Nomination

Nominations need to be submitted within the on-line system by the involved Permanent Delegations to UNESCO, the NGO or the inspiration by midnight of 18 April 2025 (UTC+1, Paris time).
