Call for Papers: Rethinking Political Identity in Africa – Graduate Student Conference 2025 at The Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR)

The Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR) invites superior graduate college students to submit abstracts (most 300 phrases) for our upcoming convention on the theme “Rethinking Political Identity in Africa”, scheduled for April 10–12, 2025.

Conference Overview

The theme explores the enduring debates round ethno-nationalism in Africa, together with the implications of identity-based state formation and calls for for ethnic federalism. Examples corresponding to Uganda’s federo motion, Kenya and Tanzania’s majimbo calls, and Nigeria’s calls for for true federalism illustrate the various expressions of these points.

Despite their prevalence, the challenges of postcolonial state formation in Ethiopia spotlight the pitfalls of these approaches. Critical inquiries into these actions should dissect assumptions about race, gender, class, ethnicity, and faith embedded in these discourses as a decolonial crucial.

Sub-Themes

We welcome papers below the next sub-themes:

  • Identity formation in pre-colonial, colonial, and postcolonial intervals.
  • Popular narratives (myths, folktales, and cultural symbols) mobilized by political actions.
  • Gender and feminist critiques of ethno-nationalist imaginations.
  • Intersectional critiques of ethno-nationalist political visions.
  • Secularist and/or spiritual dimensions of political actions.
  • Economic ideologies (e.g., capitalism, socialism, populism) of ethno-nationalist actions, addressing land, class, environmental, and ecological considerations.
  • Alternative frameworks for political group amidst ethno-nationalism.
