Digital Well-Being Challenge: Empowering Schools to Foster Healthier Digital Practices


Are you a pupil aged 13+ or an educator keen about enhancing digital well-being in your college neighborhood? The Digital Well-Being Challenge is your alternative to make an actual influence!

What Is the Digital Well-Being Challenge?

The Digital Well-Being Challenge invites college students aged 13+ and their faculties to tackle vital matters in digital citizenship and well-being. These embody:

  • Healthy social media use
  • Digital citizenship training
  • Responsible know-how insurance policies

This initiative is a collaborative effort between the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Educational Technology (OET) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Challenge goals to deliver collectively school- or district-based groups to co-design and implement options for digital citizenship and well-being challenges of their communities.

Key Dates and Eligibility

  • Applications Open: Friday, December 6, 2024
  • Applications Close: Wednesday, January 15, 2025

Who Can Apply?

Any school- or district-based staff with a main level of contact who’s a college or district workers member aged 18 or older is eligible. Teams should embody:

  • A faculty or district chief (e.g., Principal, Assistant Principal, Superintendent)
  • At least one trainer
  • At least two college students aged 13+

Teams may additionally embody extra college workers (e.g., college counselors, librarians, curriculum coordinators), household representatives, or members of community-based organizations. We suggest groups include 4-6 individuals. For extra particulars on staff composition, please refer to the Scoring Rubric.

Goals of the Challenge

The Challenge has a main aim: to empower school- or district-based groups to co-design modern methods for addressing digital citizenship and well-being points. By taking part, chosen groups will:

  • Collaborate to develop actionable options for urgent digital points.
  • Attend an Invite-Only Virtual Summit: Engage with specialists in social media, youth psychological well being, safety- and privacy-by-design, and accountable know-how use (March-April 2025).
  • Work with Expert Mentors: Refine and implement their concepts with post-summit steering.
  • Receive Prize Funding: Get at the least $1,000 to assist venture implementation (topic to fund availability).
  • Contribute to a Digital Well-Being Toolkit: Share insights and methods to profit faculties nationwide.
