Fellowship Opportunity: Writing Residency at the Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study (JIAS)


The Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study (JIAS) is happy to announce its Ninth Writing Fellowship programme, set to run from 1 April to 30 June 2025. This 12 months’s fellowship focuses on the theme of Global Blackness, exploring the multiplicity of Black experiences, mental traditions, and views worldwide.

Theme: Global Blackness

JIAS seeks to look at:

  • The geographies, practices, and theories of Blackness.
  • How Blackness manifests throughout completely different areas and occasions.

The fellowship is open to established students, inventive practitioners, and thought leaders, with desire given to people from or aligned with Global South contexts.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Scholars: PhD qualification with demonstrated engagement in analysis and publications.
  • Creative Practitioners: No PhD required however should present a powerful monitor file of exhibitions, initiatives, and interdisciplinary analysis.
  • Preference for candidates from or intently aligned with Global South contexts, in addition to girls and gender-diverse candidates of colour.

What JIAS Offers

Writing Fellows will obtain:

  • Flights: Return financial system airfare to/from Johannesburg.
  • Accommodation: Private residential suite at JIAS.
  • Meals: Daily breakfast and lunch (Monday to Friday).
  • Stipend: Taxable month-to-month stipend (whole: ZAR 90,000 over three months).
  • Facilities Access: University of Johannesburg facilities.
  • Enrichment Activities: Monthly occasions to foster engagement and collaboration.

Expectations

Fellows will work on a definitive writing or inventive venture (e.g., a ebook, screenplay, or artwork venture) and are inspired to reduce exterior commitments to focus absolutely on their residency.
