Exploring Climate Futures and Inclusive Governance in Peatlands

We are excited to announce the launch of a number of new analysis alternatives beneath the PEATSENSE venture, funded by the European Research Council Consolidator Grant (ERC CoG). Led by Dr. Naomi Millner, PEATSENSE explores the intersection of various knowledges, sensing practices, and the transformations occurring in peatlands throughout Latin America and Europe. The five-year venture goals to look at how these important ecosystems are affected by world local weather insurance policies and the arrival of new stakeholders and governance buildings.

About the PEATSENSE Project

PEATSENSE focuses on the dynamic adjustments in peatlands pushed by world local weather insurance policies and the involvement of new worldwide actors. The venture investigates how peatlands in Latin America and Europe are being reworked as half of transnational local weather mitigation efforts, and goals to doc the implications of these transformations whereas figuring out pathways towards extra simply and inclusive governance fashions.

The venture will discover how scientific data, in addition to native and indigenous understandings of peatlands, work together, significantly in the context of local weather change mitigation and restoration. By trying at the governance of these ecosystems, PEATSENSE will contribute to the growth of extra inclusive local weather methods that heart various views and experience.

Postdoctoral Opportunities

As half of this venture, Dr. Naomi Millner is recruiting three postdoctoral researchers to hitch the group. These positions will give attention to totally different themes inside the PEATSENSE venture, which embody:

  • Theme 1: Transformation of peatland ecosystems in Europe and Latin America, with a give attention to the position of transnational local weather mitigation actors.
  • Theme 2: Integration of various types of data and sensing practices into local weather governance frameworks.
  • Theme 3: Exploring pathways to inclusive governance fashions for local weather change adaptation and peatland restoration.

These positions supply a singular alternative for early-career researchers to contribute to groundbreaking work at the intersection of environmental science, social justice, and world coverage. The analysis may also present alternatives to have interaction with worldwide stakeholders and increase data on sustainable local weather futures.

PhD Opportunities

In addition to the postdoctoral positions, two PhD studentships related with PEATSENSE are actually open for purposes. These studentships supply an thrilling alternative to conduct analysis in the cultural, historic, and geographical dimensions of peatlands beneath local weather change:

  1. Cultural-Historical Geographies of European Peatlands in Changing Climates
This PhD venture, co-supervised by Dr. Naomi Millner and Dr. John Morgan, will discover the cultural and historic significance of European peatlands as they face environmental and governance adjustments as a result of local weather change. The focus can be on how local weather mitigation methods are reshaping the position of peatlands in European landscapes and how historic and cultural values of these landscapes are built-in into decision-making.
  2. Geographies of Expertise in Climate Mitigation Futures: Exploring the Transformation of Latin American Peatlands
This venture, co-supervised by Dr. Naomi Millner, Dr. James Palmer, and Dr. Naomi Millner, will study the transformation of peatlands in Latin America as new local weather mitigation actors and governance frameworks emerge. The PhD scholar will examine how totally different data techniques—starting from scientific to native and indigenous data—form the future of peatland administration and restoration.

Application Information

These PhD and postdoctoral alternatives present a singular probability to work on cutting-edge analysis in the subject of local weather change, peatland restoration, and governance. We encourage candidates with a robust interdisciplinary background in environmental science, geography, anthropology, and associated fields. If you understand anybody working in these areas, please share these alternatives with them!

Deadline for Applications: 12:00 Tuesday 1st April 2025
