Applications are open for the Nyerere Scholarship at University of Edinburgh 2025 for Tanzanians. The Centre of African Studies is delighted to announce the Nyerere Scholarship for an applicant to their MSc in Africa and International Development.

The Nyerere Scholarship offers funding for a proficient Tanzanian graduate to comply with in Julius Nyerere’s footsteps and research at the University of Edinburgh. The profitable candidate will obtain funding for a one-year postgraduate scholarship within the multidisciplinary MSc in Africa and International Development programme.

Launched in 2020, the Nyerere Scholarship has been awarded 4 instances to academically-gifted candidates. The scholarship was initiated by Prof D. Bryceson, a graduate of the University of Dar es Salaam, to commemorate the scholarly legacy of President J.Ok. Nyerere, who started his Masters diploma in 1949 at the University of Edinburgh.

Award

• The scholarship will cowl Tuition Fees and an annual stipend at the UKRI fee (quantity to be suggested; for reference, that is £19,237 in 2024/25). The annual stipend shall be paid in month-to-month instalments following full matriculation. Payments are made into the awardee’s UK checking account. Awards are made for one yr solely. The award can’t be held alongside every other scholarship funding.

Eligibility

• Applicants have to be Tanzanian residents domiciled in Tanzania;
• Must have graduated from the University of Dar es Salaam inside the final three years (i.e. 2022-2024) or shall be graduating from the University of Dar es Salaam in 2025;
• Has been accepted on the full-time MSc Africa and International Development programme.
