About the Office of the General Counsel
The Office of the General Counsel at the MacArthur Foundation plays a vital role in ensuring the Foundation’s legal compliance and governance across its diverse operations. The team works on a range of legal matters, including grantmaking, corporate law, international law, and regulatory issues. The legal staff also supports the Foundation’s mission by helping to shape policy and manage risk, and they are deeply involved in all aspects of the Foundation’s work.
The legal team at MacArthur consists of professionals including the Vice President and General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, Associate General Counsels, and a Resident in Nonprofit Law. This internship provides an opportunity to engage with all aspects of the Foundation’s legal operations.

The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated legal intern for the summer of 2025. This is an excellent opportunity for law students interested in nonprofit law, tax-exempt organizations, and international philanthropy. As part of the MacArthur Foundation’s Office of the General Counsel, you will gain hands-on experience in a dynamic and impactful environment, supporting the Foundation’s legal team and learning from seasoned professionals in the field.
Internship Responsibilities
As a Legal Intern, you will have the opportunity to assist the Office of the General Counsel with various tasks, including:
- Legal research on state and federal tax-exempt laws, corporate law, intellectual property, anti-terrorist financing laws, and international law.
- Drafting memoranda, policies, and legal documents, such as grant agreements and contracts.
- Reviewing contracts and providing support to the legal team in their day-to-day activities.
- Interfacing with Foundation staff and assisting with regulatory compliance matters.
- Gaining exposure to the philanthropic sector and understanding the legal landscape of global and national grantmaking.
You will work closely with Foundation staff across departments, gaining a broad understanding of how legal issues intersect with the Foundation’s mission and operations.
Qualifications
To be eligible for this internship, applicants must:
- Be currently enrolled in an accredited U.S. law school through at least Fall 2025.
- Have completed at least one year of law school (preferably two).
- Be in good academic standing.
- Demonstrate an interest in nonprofit law and a desire to learn about tax-exempt organization law.
- Have a working knowledge of U.S. tax law (preferred, but not required).
- Be able to work at least two days per week in the office in Chicago (hybrid work arrangement).
- Be available to remain in the Chicagoland area for the duration of the internship.
