Joint PhD Program in Theater & Performance Studies (TAPS)
Students can enhance their Romance Languages and Literatures doctoral studies by engaging with Theater & Performance Studies (TAPS), integrating academic and artistic work tailored to their interests. Learn more about the TAPS program here.
Program Details
Program Size
Each PhD cohort comprises approximately four to seven students, ensuring a focused, personalized experience.
Time to Completion
While each area has specific requirements, PhD students are expected to reach “All but Dissertation” (ABD) status by their third year and typically complete their degree within six years, with an option for a seventh year upon approval.
PhD Timeline:
- Year 1: Coursework, language prep, first-year exam
- Year 2: Complete coursework, language requirements, qualifying paper, teaching mentorship
- Year 3: Comprehensive exams, lectureships, dissertation proposal
- Year 4-6: Dissertation research and writing, fellowship applications, job applications

Courses and Teaching Experience
PhD students typically enroll in three courses per quarter in their first two years. They also gain hands-on teaching experience in various roles, supported by our pedagogical training program. View current course offerings here.
Funding and Support
All admitted PhD students receive full funding through the University and external sources for the program’s duration—no separate funding application is required. Visit the Humanities Division website for more funding information.
Application Requirements
Our PhD application includes:
- 3 Letters of Recommendation
- Transcripts (for all previous coursework)
- Writing Sample (15–20 pages, English or Romance language)
- Statement of Purpose (in English)
- English Language Proficiency Test (for non-native speakers, if required)
Important Notes:
- An undergraduate degree in a Romance language is not required.
- GRE scores are not required.
- We do not offer a part-time, online, or evening program.

Master’s Program in Humanities (MAPH)
Our one-year Master of Arts Program in Humanities (MAPH) offers advanced study in Catalan, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish, allowing students to design their curriculum and complete a thesis. For students seeking in-depth language training, the MAPH Two-Year Language Option (MAPH TLO) is available, integrating language studies over two years. Learn more about MAPH options here.
