Leadership
HLI provides training in the principles, practices, and psychology of effective, ethical and visionary leadership. We also train Hansen Fellows to be effective communicators and public speakers. In recent years, we have begun to expand our focus to gender issues in leadership as well. The intense, 24/7 face to face community of our three-week program becomes a path to a vibrant virtual hub, where Hansen alum engage, connect, and mutually support each other’s projects of peace and community building.
Mediation & Conflict Resolution
Making peace is an art that calls for understanding and nuanced social abilities. HLI offers excellent training and practical instruction in these fields. Additionally, we give our Fellows the tools they need to successfully and politely connect across cultural and political divides in order to promote restorative justice and reconciliation. In many conflict resolution scenarios, human rights concerns are crucial. Thus, a human rights activist and specialist with substantial knowledge and experience in these areas also serves as a trainer for HLI Fellows.
International Cooperation
The heart of HLI is that it fosters deep friendship and solidarity with like-minded others from zones of conflict across the world. Fellows become lifelong members of a close-knit and highly engaged international community, which exposes them to new opportunities for service, education, and friendship across borders. The three-week program itself is a yearly experiment in international cooperation. People from warring countries start as awkward roommates. They leave the program as close friends with a mutual resolve to make peace between their peoples.
Our Vision
International cooperation was to be the means by which Fred J. Hansen envisioned a more peaceful world. He wanted foreigners to come to the United States to see its government, economy, and culture firsthand. He also wished for more knowledge among Americans on the peoples and customs of the wider world. To realise this vision, he was aware that principled, driven, and unwavering leadership would be necessary.
This vision of global peace brought about by increased mutual understanding and morally sound leadership serves as the foundation for the Hansen Leadership Institute. By means of generational shift, we aim for this. We think that bringing together young leaders from conflict-ridden regions of the world is necessary to ensure future peace. It is necessary for foes to become friends. They need to learn how to work through their issues with mutual respect as well as without resorting to violence. They will then inspire others to follow suit. Kindness and respect are contagious, just like violence is.
HLI aims to increase hope in a world that sometimes seems to be without it. We do not think that perpetual warfare and ever-present violence are inevitable or appropriate. The belief held by Hansen Fellows is that they have the power to drastically improve the world. HLI is here to support them in doing so.
