Harvard is dedicated to supporting the growth of bright academics who have a passion for environmental studies. Goal:
In order to provide recent PhD graduates with the opportunity to utilize and extend Harvard’s exceptional resources to address challenging environmental concerns, HUCE established the Environmental Fellows program. For a duration of two years, fellows collaborate with faculty members from any school or department at Harvard to establish a network of researchers that fortifies relationships throughout the University.
The Prize:
A $2,500 yearly stipend for travel and other professional expenditures, employee health insurance eligibility, a $2,500 reimbursement for relocation costs, and an annual salary of $87,500 are all included in the fellowship. Anyone with a PhD or similar terminal degree conferred between May 2020 and August 2024 is eligible to apply for the Environmental Fellows Program. Approximately six fellowships will be given out by HUCE for the 2024 cohort.
In order to guarantee that the fellows are acquainted with one another and each other’s work, HUCE arranges a co-curricular program.
Every two weeks, a speaker from among the Harvard faculty members and fellows gather for dinner.
Eligibility
- Recommendation and host letters must be submitted by January 19, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. EST, nine days following the application deadline.
- Those who wish to be considered for the 2024 Environmental Fellowships must have graduated between May 2020 and August 2024. (Fellows appointed in September 2024 must have submitted their dissertation by then.)
- Candidates may submit research project proposals in any area and are eligible if they hold a PhD or its equivalent in any field. If a candidate has studied in a field where a PhD is not usually the terminal degree, they may still apply without one. Every accepted applicant will be able to provide proof of prior experience conducting academic research.
- As long as their research and host arrangements take them in new directions that are noticeably different from their PhD research and create new connections within the University, candidates who received their terminal degrees from Harvard and post-docs who are currently employed there are eligible for the fellowship. Candidates to Harvard should not suggest sticking with the same instructors or research teams that they now collaborate with. No applicant should suggest doing a lot of work with their thesis advisor.
- For the duration of the two-year fellowship, each candidate must get a commitment from one or more Harvard faculty members to act as a mentor and to offer office or lab space. It is not possible for faculty members who host colleagues in 2023 to host fellows in 2024. Michael Brenner, Peter Huybers, Henry Lee, Tiya Miles, Dan Schrag, Missy Holbrook, and Ben Taylor are among those involved in this.
- Harvard is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer.
- Candidates may have graduated from any university in the globe with a degree. Fellowships are available to foreign nationals; nevertheless, study at Harvard normally requires fluency in English.
- Those who are selected for the fellowship should be willing to dedicate themselves to working at Harvard for the entire two years. Residency in the Cambridge region is required for this fellowship, and any fieldwork trips must fall during the summer or January break.
