In order to properly handle the energy problem throughout the African continent, the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Regional Leadership Centres (RLCs) promote the employment of ecologically friendly technologies. In an effort to assist former students working in this field, the RLCs, in partnership with Power Africa, are presenting a design challenge to female graduates involved in the energy industry.

Applications for the 12-week program, which will take place online beginning in the first quarter of 2024, are encouraged from interested parties. An interactive online curriculum focused on sustainability, renewable energy, and the SDGs is part of the program. Through a highly experiential learning structure, the curriculum will assist participants in formulating ideas for solutions to the Design Challenge using the “Empathise, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test approach.”
Alumni will talk about their experiences and broaden their knowledge in important areas where more sustainability practice and development are required during the program. Participants will present their ideas to a panel of judges after the learning time, and the judges will rank the best ideas to identify the top three winners.
The challenge’s goal is to raise awareness of Africa’s creative approaches to environmentally friendly, sustainable energy. YALI RLCs’ female alumni who are employed in the energy industry are encouraged to apply. A selection of 24 exceptional individuals will be made to take part in the design challenge based on the concepts that were submitted.
Benefits
The winners will receive six months of mentoring to help them construct prototypes, along with a small amount of financing for their business ideas.
Application Process
- The application period begins on November 27, 2023, and runs for three weeks, ending on December 15, 2023.
- The announcement of the chosen participants will take place on January 22, 2023.
- *Please be aware that the only way to participate in this program will be through submissions. After being chosen, participants will work on their own project ideas for the duration of the Challenge. However, throughout the interactive online learning sessions and assignments, they will also be divided into several teams.
