Workplace Environment and Collaborative Partnerships

When the scope of the operation calls for it, the Administrative Officer, Associate, Assistant, or another staff member typically oversees the driver directly at the UNHCR Office. In addition to driving, the incumbent is in charge of maintaining the designated UNHCR vehicle or vehicles in accordance with the organization’s technical guidelines and standards. He or she must adhere to the supervisor’s stringent instructions and security directives. Although a driver’s primary responsibility is to operate UNHCR-approved cars, they may also be asked to do minor maintenance and repairs on UNHCR vehicles.

The Driver regularly communicates informally with employees of the UNHCR Office as well as with partners, government officials, and other parties outside the organization.

Every employee of the UNHCR is responsible for carrying out their responsibilities as outlined in their job description. They act in accordance with the UNHCR’s regulatory framework, which consists of the UN Charter, UN Staff Regulations and Rules, UNHCR Policies and Administrative Instructions, as well as pertinent accountability frameworks, and within the bounds of their delegated authority. Staff members must also carry out their duties in a way that aligns with UNHCR’s basic values of professionalism, integrity, and respect for diversity as well as the organization’s core, functional, cross-functional, and managerial competences.

  • Operate UNHCR vehicles to carry authorized individuals; deliver and retrieve other objects, including paperwork.
  • Meet representatives from the government at airports and other places, and assist with necessary immigration and customs procedures.
  • Carry out routine maintenance on the designated UNHCR vehicles, including checking the oil, water, battery, brakes, tires, and other components. Make sure the vehicles are road- or waterway-worthy and kept up to the specified security requirements.
  • Make minor repairs, make any repair arrangements, and make sure the car is kept clean.
  • Verify that, in the event of an accident, the actions mandated by laws, ordinances, or other local protocols are followed.
  • Keep track of all official travel, daily mileage, petrol used, oil changes, grease, and other details.
  • Verify that the security focal point and supervisor’s instructions and guidelines are properly followed.

Verifies that all belongings, goods, and passengers in the car have the proper paperwork.

Language Prerequisites

Ideal Candidate Characteristics

Along with meeting all the requirements of the standard job description, the candidate should also possess strong driving abilities due to the unique nature of the roads in the Somali region of Ethiopia, particularly in Bokh, Hegalle, Mirqaan, Galhamour, and similar districts. The candidate should also have excellent knowledge of the area in which Bokh FO operates.
