The goal of the Microsoft Research AI & Society Fellows programme is to spark research partnerships between Microsoft Research and distinguished academics and specialists from a variety of fields who are essential to conversations about artificial intelligence and how it affects society. Microsoft is committed to fostering multidisciplinary collaboration that leads to practical outcomes, acknowledging the need of bridging the gaps across the domains of academia, industry, policy, and regulation.

Microsoft aims to enhance scholarly debate and benefit society at large by promoting strategic collaborations, sparking new research ideas, and contributing publicly available works through an open, worldwide call for proposals focused on a particular set of research challenges.
Eligibility
- To participate in a range of multidisciplinary partnerships centred on important research challenges, Microsoft is looking for prominent researchers and top professionals from a wide range of topics and disciplines.
- Candidates must attest that they are presently pursuing (enrolled in a programme) or have previously obtained their terminal degree in their relevant field or discipline in order to be eligible to apply. The highest degree that can be obtained in your academic field or professional field is known as a terminal degree.
- A fellow who is chosen to participate in the Microsoft Research AI & Society Fellows programme may face disciplinary action if they engage in inappropriate behaviour. This includes, but is not limited to, plagiarism, harassment, including sexual harassment, and discrimination.
Proposal standards
- Submissions for all projects must be made using the submission site (see above). Email proposals won’t be accepted.
Every submission shall consist of:
- Candidate details (location, organisation, area of study/work emphasis, etc.)
- “Statement of Interest” title (limited to 80 characters)
- submitting a document titled “Statement of Interest.”
- This paper should not exceed three pages, with the option to include an appendix and citations when necessary.

- CV or resume of the candidate to be uploaded to the submission portal.
An effective submission will
- Show that you have a thorough awareness of the research challenge and its goals in terms of societal effect.
- Give an overview of related work and successes, show how one’s motivations connect with the research challenge, and discuss the possible effects of teamwork.
- Be written in a clear and compliant manner with programme requirements.
- Remember that during the evaluation process, readability and clarity are important.

- November 2, 2023 | International call for bids begins
- November 29, 2023 (11:59:59 PM ET) is the deadline for proposals.
- The 2023 Microsoft Research AI & Society Fellows will be globally announced on January 30, 2024. The research cooperation term will run from February 2024 to February 2025.
