Requirements
- Early career diplomats with a background in international relations, foreign affairs, or international law who are involved in or interested in international water and environmental politics.
Eligibility
In order to be qualified to take part, candidates must:
- Possess a Bachelor’s degree, at minimum.
- Applicants under 40 who are in their early stages of their careers and have work experience in the fields of international relations, foreign affairs, diplomacy, conflict resolution, and cooperation—preferably in regard to environmental or water-related issues—will be given preference.
- Possess a great grasp of the English language, as evidenced by their ability to read and comprehend academic material and express ideas clearly.

- There are no particular requirements for this course. However, there are necessary prerequisites, including working experience or knowledge in the areas of diplomacy, conflict resolution, international relations, and foreign affairs, ideally with regard to environmental or water-related concerns. Participants with degrees in the arts, social sciences, or law will profit from the training.
Course material
- The Young Water Diplomats Programme will take place in 2024, specifically from January to July. Participants will participate in both online and in-person learning activities, including lectures, reading assignments, group projects, and expert discussions, over the course of this six-month period.
- There will be practitioner inputs mixed in with topical lectures given by eminent scholars. Engaging dialogues with diplomats with backgrounds in environmental and water-related peacebuilding will offer chances to exchange insights and learn firsthand.
- The programme consists of two in-person sessions, one in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and the other in Delft, the Netherlands, as well as bimonthly webinars held throughout the course.
Requirements
- It is anticipated that participants will dedicate around four hours per week on average to meet the program’s minimum requirements. The webinars will happen twice a month on weekdays during CET working hours. Furthermore, you are anticipated to travel to Kazakhstan and the Netherlands for the April and June in-person meetings.
The 16-hour workweek on average consists of the following required tasks:
- Engaging in two webinars a month (with talks, debates, presentations, and other events)
- Preparatory literature
- Participation in group projects
- Fulfilment of individual, self-paced assignments
- Taking part in two workshops in Delft, Netherlands (June 2024) and Almaty, Kazakhstan (April 2024)
Prices
- The programme fee is €1400, which does not include VAT. Participants will also be responsible for covering the costs of travel, visas, insurance, living expenses, and lodging for the in-person meetings in Almaty and Delft.
- Applicants from low- and middle-income nations who satisfy all requirements are eligible to apply for a scholarship that pays for program-related expenditures, such as the programme fee and travel expenses.
