Applications for the third cohort of IRI’s McCain Fellowship for Freedom are now being accepted. The IRI McCain Fellowship for Freedom (MFF) unites emerging leaders from throughout the globe to carry on the 25-year legacy of Senator John McCain, the organisation’s chairman, of developing a new wave of democratic leaders on all continents.

Through the McCain Fellowship for Freedom, IRI has been realising McCain’s goal of advancing political and economic freedom across the globe since 2019. Established in remembrance of Senator McCain’s enduring conviction that “free markets are not possible without free people,” the Fellowship unites young leaders committed to promoting economic freedom and democracy from all around the globe. These leaders share ideas and new insights on how to best advance democracy and citizen-centered governance with policy makers, business owners, thought leaders, and other change makers. IRI has welcomed 16 world leaders from 15 different nations since the program’s inception.

Selection Standards

  • Rising political figures between the ages of 21 and 40 who are dedicated to advancing economic and political freedom in their nations are known as McCain Fellows.
  • They have an established history of success and leadership in demanding settings.
  • They represent the capacity to have a revolutionary influence on their organisations, societies, and nations.
  • By means of this programme, these up-and-coming leaders will be integrated into IRI’s worldwide network spanning over 100 countries, use their expertise and connections to accelerate their contributions towards the advancement of free societies.

Based on the following standards, IRI will choose up to eight young leaders who represent various areas, industries, and gender identities:

  • In the range of 21 to 40 years old;
  • Not an American citizen
  • Competent in the language;
  • Has extensive experience in the political, governmental, and/or private sectors; cross-sector experience is preferred;
  • Demonstrates a track record of success and a strong commitment to promoting free market and democratic transformation;
  • Keeps up a position of leadership and authority in their society and profession.

Conditions for Nomination

  • A letter of nomination must be submitted by each applicant in order to be considered for the McCain Fellowship for Freedom.
  • A person you are well-known to in the business world and who can vouch for your eligibility for the fellowship should be the nominee.

Particulars to emphasise in the letter of nomination:

  • How the applicant has encouraged free market principles and democratic resilience in their community; How the applicant has shown that they are capable of leading and have the potential to be a political changemaker in their community; and
  • How the applicant will use the fellowship to further their development as a political changemaker and how they are specially positioned to be an outstanding McCain Fellow.
  • The nomination letter must be written in English and should not exceed one page.
