The University of Edinburgh is accepting applications for the Mastercard Foundation On-Campus Postgraduate Scholarships for the academic years 2023–2024. The goal of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme is to significantly contribute to the effort to address the climate issue.

The program’s goal is to develop a network of gifted, enterprising, and compassionate leaders from all around Sub-Saharan Africa. By providing a variety of great sustainability-focused postgraduate options through the Scholars Programme at the University of Edinburgh, they equip young people with the knowledge, abilities, and networks required to achieve sustainable transformations.
This scholarship is only available for the following programmes during the postgraduate year on campus:
- International Development and Africa
- Food Safety
- Systems for Sustainable Energy
- Business ventures and inventiveness
- Inequality, Data, and Society
- Sustainability in the Environment and Operational Research
- Changing Climate Investment and Finance
- Planetary Development, Environment, and Health
Eligibility
To apply, you must fulfil the eligibility requirements.
- In order to be admitted to the University of Edinburgh for a specified degree programme, applicants must meet the academic requirements. Generally speaking, you must have earned a degree that is at least the equivalent of a UK Second Class (Upper) Bachelor’s (Hons) degree. Learn more about your nation’s postgraduate admission requirements:
- The applicants will have encountered major obstacles (social, economical, personal, practical, or health-related) on their path to school.
- By December 7th, applicants must have completed their undergraduate studies by September 2023 and upload a copy of their degree certificate and official final transcript.
- Candidates must reside in a Sub-Saharan African nation, be citizens of that nation, or have refugee status.
- Candidates must have encountered obstacles while in school and in their early careers.
- Candidates must present evidence of their previous community leadership and service.
- Candidates must have knowledge of or at least want to address the climate crisis in a significant way.
- Candidates must be under 35 years old on September 1, 2024.
- In addition to not having finished a postgraduate degree in the past, applicants cannot be enrolled in another university or apply to enrol there while receiving the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship.
- In order to be eligible for the on-campus Master’s programme, applicants must not already hold a postgraduate degree and must not be enrolled (or seek admission to) another university while receiving the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship.
Benefits
- Fully pays for qualifying tuition, housing, transport, a living allowance, and study materials.
- A programme on climate leadership designed to encourage and assist scholars in bringing about change in their nations and communities.
- Students with impairments are given additional assistance based on an evaluation of their needs.

- 7 December 2023, 5 p.m. UKApplications end on.
- Beginning in early February 2024, candidates are shortlisted for on-campus (ODL) interviews; both successful and unsuccessful candidates will be contacted.
- Interviews are held on-campus around the middle to end of February 2024.
- The results of the on-campus interviews will be made public by mid-March.
- March–August 2024: Assistance given via immigration and admissions procedures.
- The academic programme begins in September 2024.
Application
- Academic qualifications are a prerequisite for admission to the University of Edinburgh. Before submitting an application to the university, candidates must first apply for this scholarship.
- Applications sent outside of the online application system will not be accepted by the Scholars Programme.
