The Great Green Wall Initiative (SADC-GGWI), the Department of Forestry and Range Resources (DFRR), and the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme invite Community Based Organisations in the villages of Nlapkhwane and Masukwane in the Kweneng District to submit project proposals that support innovative, inclusive, and scalable initiatives that encourage multi-stakeholder partnerships at the local level.

In accordance with the country’s national action programme for the SADC GGWI as well as the GEF targets, the proposed initiatives should be created to tackle and address environmental conservation and socio-economic benefits to the local communities within the three selected areas under the following focal areas: Land Degradation, Sustainable Land and Forest Management.

- The submitted project can get a maximum award of Botswana Pulas, which is equal to USD 50,000.00.
responsibilities and obligations
- Engage in discussions with local government officials, technical advisory committees (TACs), and other pertinent parties to reach an agreement, cooperate, and form a partnership on SGP-supported projects;
- In order to advance sustainable land management (SLM) and sustainable forest management (SFM) strategies, you should suggest pilot projects that concentrate on one of the two programme target areas.
- (In contrast to Nlapkhwane and Masukwane, where the projects will concentrate on rehabilitation of degraded areas, especially agricultural areas, Keneng focuses on sustainable utilisation of forest and range resources to enhance people’s participation and develop income generation activities for the rural communities.)
- Grantees are encouraged to promote and improve the use of traditional knowledge systems and indigenous knowledge throughout the implementation of projects;
- Oversee and ensure that all planned activities approved for inclusion in Annual Work Plans (AWPs) are carried out in accordance with the standards necessary to meet the needs of each sector;
- Conduct recurring site inspections for the project and keep an eye on its advancement in accordance with the authorised AWPs;
anticipated results
- According to the approved Memorandum of Agreement (MoA), the following outcomes are anticipated from the proposed projects:
- reports on the overall implementation of GEF/SGP projects (including monthly updates on progress).
- Final report reflecting the impact and desired outcomes as stated in the project application that was approved.
- A minimum of three dissemination-ready knowledge items, such as policy briefs, posters, booklets, toolkits, posters, videos, and short tales or essays.
eligibility requirements
- The SGP exclusively provides funding to organisations with a non-profit focus that are registered in Botswana, such as academic institutions and research centres as well as civil society organisations (including non-governmental and community-based organisations). The qualified entities must submit the following proposals:
- A copy of the registration certificate, the constitution, or other governing documents (the letter of authority), as well as other documentation demonstrating registration as a civil society organisation (CBO, NGO, or cooperative society);
- Academic and research institutions created by a parliamentary act; documentation of registration or act required;
- One CSO may apply as the lead organisation and project executor in a group of CSOs; institutional structures should clearly define the roles of the two organisations.
- Applications are invited from CSOs that are leading initiatives to improve the inclusion of disadvantaged populations like women, youth, people with disabilities, and the San community.
