The first Regional AMR Champion Journalist and Media House Awards are being held in conjunction by quadripartite (FAO, UNEP, WOAH, WHO) and the African Union, and the World Health Organisation Regional Office for Africa is happy to announce the call for entries.
These prizes are intended to honour outstanding efforts in educating the public about antibiotic resistance (AMR) and encouraging ethical reporting in the industry.
A critical global health hazard, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), requires effective communication to be addressed.

The Regional AMR Champion Journalist and Media House Awards are given to media organisations and journalists who have excelled in reporting, investigative journalism, narrative, and AMR advocacy.
Categories
- The regional AMR Champion Journalist Award honours journalists who have made outstanding contributions to AMR journalism through investigative reports, features, essays, or other types of media.
- Media organisations who have regularly demonstrated a dedication to covering AMR-related themes, encouraging responsible reporting, and increasing general awareness about AMR through their organisational efforts are recognised with the Regional AMR Champion Media House Award.
eligibility
- Journalists and media organisations (Private/Commercial Radio, Community Radio, Television, Print Media, Online Media) operating in the African Region are eligible for the prizes.
- The publication or transmission of entries must have taken place between January 1, 2022, and September 30, 2023.
- Articles, newscasts, radio or television segments, documentaries, podcasts, and online multimedia assets are all acceptable forms of submission.
Guidelines for Submissions
- Complete the official entry form that is attached to our website.
- Give a succinct overview of the submitted work, including the title, the date it was published or broadcast, and how it contributed to bringing attention to AMR.
- By October 20, 2023, send the entry form and supporting documents by email to muhilamemory1@gmail.com. In the subject line, please write “AMR Champion Journalist Award” or “AMR Media House Award.”
- Entries will be accepted starting on October 9 and must be received by Friday, October 30, 2023 (before 2 p.m. GMT).
How to apply for the prizes
- By completing the form included with this call for entries, organisations or individuals may submit entries.
- A participant may designate a proxy to submit a submission on their behalf as long as the author of the entry has given their consent.
- The participant who authorises a proxy must provide documentation of this instruction.
- A submission must be made by the proxy on behalf of the person who appointed them.
- Each person or organisation is limited to three entries total across all awards.
What criteria will the judges use?
- Reporting analytics
- Facts are used in reporting.
- What kind of an impact did the reporting have?
- Did it spark debate or conversation?
- Did it lead to a change in policy or better service?
- Should demonstrate independence, objectivity, coherence, clarity, simplicity, and plot.
- Ought to be ethically responsible content
Rules for Award Submissions
- Judges will only take into account entries that are submitted using the entry form and formats listed below, therefore entries must be carefully prepared;
- Entrants must provide evidence that their entries have been published by including newspaper clippings (photocopies), recorded radio or video programmes, and supervisor confirmation that the entry has been published.
- Every entry (print, video, and audio included) must contain a 100-word introductory paragraph outlining why it deserves to win an award. This can be entered in Appendix I of the form that is attached.
- Entries must be properly labelled with the category they belong in, along with the name of the organisation or media outlet where they were published. This needs to be followed with a succinct profile of the person or group submitting the award.
- Submissions for audio and video should be in a format that is frequently used and simple to access, such as.mp3,.mp4, and.wma, among others.
Supporting Resources
- Jpegs or press cuttings that must be A4 in size.
- Please add movies and photographs that in some way represent your entry in the slide show.
- This may be used in a slide show presentation at the Awards ceremony to inform the audience about the submitted entries but will not be used in the judging process.
- Entry Participation The deadline is October 30, 2023, and the organising committee must receive all entries by 2PM GMT on that day.
- Any entry received after that time and date won’t be taken into consideration. The deadline is rigorous and cannot be extended!
Selection Process
- An impartial panel of judges with expertise in both AMR and journalism will evaluate entries based on the aforementioned standards.
- By [10th November 2023], winners will be chosen and notified.
- The awards will be given out between November 18 and November 24, 2023, in Harare, Zimbabwe, during the commemoration of the 2023 WAAW Continental.
Rewards and Appreciation
- All victors will also get a custom-made Quadripartite and Africa Union trophy or plaque in addition to their reward.
- Additionally, victors will get the chance to exhibit their work during the physical continent commemoration of World AMR Awareness Week in 2023, which will be hosted in Harare, Zimbabwe (paid trip).
- We welcome journalists and media organisations interested in AMR j to submit their contributions and contribute to raising awareness and inciting action about this important issue.

The verdict of the judges shall be final. The nominee has unconditionally accepted the Award’s terms and conditions by agreeing to enter for these Awards.
