  • The Head of Office and other senior officials are the primary clients of the Senior Driver. When the scope of the operation calls for it, the Administrative Officer, Associate, Assistant, or other staff member will typically oversee the incumbent directly. In addition to driving, he or she is in charge of maintaining the designated UNHCR vehicle(s) in accordance with the organization’s technical guidelines and requirements. He or she must adhere to the supervisor’s stringent instructions and security directives. Although a Senior Driver’s primary responsibility is to operate UNHCR-owned cars, they may also be asked to handle light maintenance and repairs on the organization’s fleet as well as any secretarial, maintenance, or other support tasks deemed essential for office operations. He or she might as well offer interpreting services.
  • The Senior Driver regularly communicates informally with employees of the UNHCR Office as well as with partners, governmental officials, and other parties outside the organization.

  • Operate UNHCR vehicles to transport authorized people, as well as to deliver and pick up other things and papers.

  • Carry out routine maintenance on the designated UNHCR vehicles, including checking the oil, water, battery, brakes, tires, and other components. Make sure the vehicles are road- or waterway-worthy and kept up to the specified security requirements.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the car, make minor repairs and make arrangements for more.
  • Verify that, in the event of an accident, the actions mandated by laws, ordinances, or other local requirements are followed.
  • Keep track of official travels, daily miles, petrol used, oil changes, grease, and other details. When necessary, produce usage reports.

Profile of the ideal candidate

  • Dadaab’s operating environment is defined by high political risk and security. This functional role is tough, requiring maturity, substantial experience, and excellent driving skills in such a volatile political and security climate.
  • In order to ensure optimal performance and outcomes, the current Senior Driver’s profile should include knowledge of the security situation in and around Dadaab, including the unpredictable weather patterns; an understanding of Dadaab’s traffic dynamics, including which roads to use and when to navigate traffic to ensure smooth delivery of staff, officials, and visitors to their work assignments on time; and a strong sense of responsibility.
  • The senior driver is responsible for maintaining adherence to local driving laws and regulations while possessing a strong understanding of protocol. Understand the region’s enhanced security dynamics, particularly the county’s topography and networks; when the need arises, be able to drive defensively and survive on the streets. possess strong interpersonal skills, a thorough understanding of the local environment, fluency in both the local and national languages, and an advantage in the execution of community-based programs. Respect the Kenya Highway Code’s guidelines and laws and act quickly in the event of an accident.
  • Resuming other office responsibilities, such as filing, making trip plans and preparations, and setting up the required emergency car accessories, should be the senior driver’s proactive task. Make sure that the pertinent documentation, such as insurance, are valid and record all trip details, including fuel usage, observed problems, tyre condition, vehicle tools, and other facts, in the vehicle movement log sheet.
