Important Tasks and Responsibilities
The following responsibilities will be carried out by the public information analyst under the general supervision of the Head of Public Information Unit:
coordination of communications
- Supports the Humanitarian Communications Working Group’s secretariat by facilitating meeting schedules, following up on action items, drafting meeting minutes, distributing important information, and maintaining contact lists.
- under the direction of the Unit leader, aids in the creation of country-level messages.
- In collaboration with the Head of Unit, contribute to the creation and implementation of collective communications initiatives.
- assists the unit’s head in facilitating interactions with coworkers at working levels in pertinent government agencies.
- organizes interviews, press conferences, field excursions for the media, and other outreach programs.
Press Relations
- observes trends and concerns in public opinion and the media, and assists the head of unit in advising the resident and humanitarian coordinator and the head of OCHA’s office on the best media relations strategies.
- keeps up fruitful collaborations with reliable local, national, and worldwide media.
- creates and maintains contact lists of influential national and worldwide media.
- supports first drafts of press releases, statements, and news articles, among other communication products.
- provides logistical support for press conferences and interviews, ensuring the full participation of renowned, authoritative media.
Creating content
- The Public Information Analyst facilitates the creation and distribution of high-quality communications materials to raise public understanding of OCHA’s mission, response, and priority humanitarian issues.
- regularly travels to Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe (BAY) states to interview partners and those who are impacted in order to obtain information.
- enables media missions to the BAY states in order to increase awareness of the situation.
- supports the creation or commissioning of high-quality multimedia content, such as movies, infographics, written, photographic, and audio-visual storytelling, as well as social media graphics.
- oversees the translation of important communications materials into local languages.
electronic media
- The OCHA web platforms and social media initiatives are developed and maintained with the assistance of the public information analyst.
- maintains corporate and Head of Office social media accounts at the national level.
- produces captivating social media material, such as campaigns to raise awareness, and finds creative ways to engage online audiences.
- observes social media activities carried out by other UN agencies, local governments, non-profit organizations, and other stakeholders, and searches for chances to work together, including with opinion influencers.
Business communications
- The public information analyst aids with communications initiatives directed by headquarters and internal.
- Supports the creation of daily operating updates for sharing with headquarters under the direction of the unit head.
- researches, sources, and suggests story ideas for OCHA corporate communications.
- helps local partners, the media, the creative sector, and humanitarian stakeholders commemorate OCHA corporate campaigns like World Humanitarian Day (19 August) on the ground.
- increases awareness of the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund and aids in attempts to raise awareness of donors and mobilize resources.

Qualifications:
Education:
- a Master’s degree or its equivalent in journalism, communications, international relations, or a comparable profession.
OR
- In exceptional cases, a first-level university degree with pertinent academic credentials and a minimum of two years of relevant work experience may be accepted in place of the advanced university degree.
Experience:
- It takes up to two (2) years of steadily increasing responsibility in the reporting, communication, and humanitarian/development fields.
- Knowledge of social media and previous reporting or media experience are desirable.
- It would be ideal if you have experience using Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, and Premiere for video editing and graphic designing.
- It would be ideal to have prior communication, writing, and analytical skills experience.
- Experience working in a humanitarian capacity for the UN or another comparable international agency is preferred.
Language specifications
- It’s necessary to speak and write English well.
- It is ideal to be fluent in both written and spoken Hausa.
