If you want to be an advocate for every child, you’ll need to…

  • It is necessary to have a graduate degree in education or one of the social sciences, such as economics, psychology, sociology, or another social science.
  • A minimum of 8 years of relevant, progressively responsible work experience in international program design, management, and/or research in education, with some of that experience preferably in poor nations, is required. Experience working for a UN organization or UN system agency is advantageous. An advantage is having experience responding to emergencies.
  • English proficiency is necessary. It is advantageous to be conversant in another UN official language or the local tongue.

The following technical competencies need to be shown:

  • Good understanding of the overall global development context, including issues like poverty, conflict, and how these affect education and vice versa; inter-sectoral approaches to address these issues in collaboration with other sectors (including social policy, child protection, nutrition, WASH, health, and communications within UNICEF); and.
  • good understanding of international engagement techniques and global changes in education, particularly how to apply the equity lens and human rights perspectives to programming.
  • Ability to translate research findings and data into development programs and policy talks about equality and learning with partners, including the government, development partners, CSOs, and academic institutions in pertinent fields, is a strong suit.
  • Good education and policy sector analysis skills, including knowledge of the fundamental educational data sets, indicators, tools for analyzing equity, factors affecting student access and learning, budget, cost, and financing, management of the educational system, and political economy, as well as application to educational policy and strategic planning.
  • Good planning skills for the education sector should cover a variety of delivery methods, connections between different sub-sectors (such as ECD, Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, and Inclusive Education), issues with cost-effectiveness and efficiency, important institutional structures, components, and procedures, as well as governance concerns.
  • Excellent capacity to enable networking with other important partners as well as involvement with partners (e.g., Sector Wide Approaches, Global Partnership for Education, Education in Emergency Clusters, Education Provider Forums, Delivering as One, Inter-sectoral Partnerships such as in ECD).
  • Effective application of gender and equity analysis to policy and planning in education, as well as a solid awareness of gender and equity concerns in relation to education and development.
  • Good knowledge of policies and tactics to address resilience-related challenges, including risk analysis and risk management, training in conflict situations, recovery from natural disasters, and where applicable,
