The National Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture has once again announced the launch of the Mzansi Golden Economy (MGE) open call grant funding applications to the cultural and creative industries as part of its ongoing efforts to maximise the economic impact and development of the arts in South Africa.

The government’s programme of action for social cohesion, the creation of sustainable jobs, and assuring social and economic development launched the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture’s strategy to reposition the arts, culture, and heritage sector as major stakeholders.

Objectives

  • In order to support a variety of artistic and cultural events marking the 30th anniversary of democracy in South Africa. South Africa will celebrate its 30th anniversary of democracy in 2024.

  • Mandatory – Applicants must present a letter of invitation from an organisation or counterpart requesting them to participate.

Criteria

  • An already-produced work of culture and creativity.
  • Insofar as the current product can show that it is commercially feasible, marketable, and possibly profitable.
  • Local economic development and job creation
  • How much ownership, involvement, and employment are shared by women, young people, and persons with disabilities; how much each job or employment opportunity costs; how many jobs or employment chances are produced for cultural and creative practitioners/artists.
  • Market Development and Access
  • How much the event will increase participants’ market potential
  • Describe the possible market in detail that is being investigated and/or developed.
  • Innovative & Competitive: Creativity
  • Uniqueness of the suggested project.
  • the calibre of the artistic and cultural programming.
  • Grant Stakes: The highest grant amount offered is R 1 million for each beneficiary.
  • Goals for Public Art
  • To enhance public open space and encourage its use.
  • To create and impose a demand for artistic and cultural goods.
  • To encourage people to participate in the arts.
  • To assist various artistic endeavours that are dispersed geographically


Criteria

  • To enhance public open space and encourage its use.
  • The public art installation must be located outside in a place that the general public may access.
  • Encourage the purchase of artistic and cultural goods and services.
  • Describe the project’s contribution to boosting demand for arts, culture, and heritage activities based on the likelihood that the grant application will be successful.
  • To encourage public participation in the arts, culture, and heritage.
  • Showcase and encourage the range of artistic and creative abilities in South Africa.
  • Local cultural and artistic practitioners and artists should be profiled and promoted.
  • Local economic development and job creation
  • How much ownership, involvement, and employment is shared by women, young people, and persons with disabilities; how much each job or employment opportunity costs; how many jobs or employment chances are produced for cultural and creative practitioners/artists.
  • Grant Threshold: The maximum grant amount per beneficiary is R 500,000.

eligibility requirements

  • All tax-compliant South African Citizens owned and managed arts, cultural, and heritage organisations and businesses that have their own independent legal status—that is, are registered as Public Limited Companies or Non-Profit Corporations—are eligible to apply for this call.
  • No beneficiary shall ever receive two DSAC grants at the same time, regardless of the size of the awards or where they came from within any given year’s DSAC programmes. Organisations must disclose any other ties to DSAC.
  • Each organisation or business is only permitted to submit one application per grant period.
  • Preference will be given to projects that are co-financed, partially-financed, or have any other type of partnerships, depending on the overall budget and the size of the project. Such commitment must be supported by evidence.

Administrative requirements

The following actions will result in immediate disqualification:

  • Erroneous and dishonest information being given.
  • Submission of an incomplete application form, proposal, or compliance documentation.
  • Applications that are submitted that do not follow the approved format and length requirements.
  • Not disclosing any potential conflicts of interest.
  • Omitting to include any financing that has been secured for the project being applied for and/or any work that is currently being done for the DSAC.
  • The project’s timeline exceeds the funding’s specified deadlines.
