Resilient Agriculture for Inclusive and Sustainable Food Systems (RAISE-FS) is a project being carried out by the Stichting Wageningen Research (SWR) in Ethiopia with the aim of developing evidence for practises that contribute to the transformation of the food system by addressing leverage points in relation to productivity, enhanced value chain performance, and improved human nutrition for improved food security while minimising the impact on the environment and ensuring

One of its initiatives focuses on encouraging innovation driven by the private sector through a grant programme dubbed the “Innovation Fund” that provides financing. These cutting-edge initiatives could help smallholder farmers in Ethiopia overcome obstacles to development while enhancing food systems and/or boosting exports of specific commodities.

Grant Amount

  • A grant of between €25,001 and €50,000
  • $10,001 to $25,000 for Grant Category B

Cost reimbursements from the innovation fund

  • The RAISE-FS innovation fund will pay for the costs of buying supplies, consumables, and other goods absolutely necessary for carrying out project activities;
  • Hiring experienced and temporary workers is crucial for carrying out tasks related to innovation;
  • Depending on the project’s needs, acquiring farm supplies (such as fertiliser, pesticides, lab chemicals, packing materials, etc.)

Innovations that cannot receive money

  • Innovations that were previously supported by RAISE-FS during the first round of funding or by BENEFIT, the predecessor programme to RAISE-FS, are not eligible for funding.
  • Not eligible are initiatives supported by the Dutch government through its embassy in Addis Abeba and run by several NGOs there. The same applies to initiatives that are currently receiving funding from another donor but have not yet been finished. Projects submitted with various names but identical content are ineligible.

Criteria

The following requirements must be met by applicants and projects in order to be eligible for the Innovation Fund:

  • The project should address issues in the potato, vegetable, poultry, pulse, spice, oilseed, or pulses industries.
  • Ideally, the initiative should not have received financing or support from any other donors.
  • The project must directly or indirectly benefit producers, processors, consumers, and/or work towards the economic empowerment of women and young people.
  • Within a year, the initiative should be put into action.
  • In order to participate in the project, applicants must contribute both money and goods in kind.
  • The applicant must be able to provide a current business licence from Ethiopia. Therefore, there is no restriction on the country of citizenship of applicant companies’ shareholders.
  • Applications may be submitted by partnerships made up of several businesses, NGOs, research institutions, etc., as long as at least one of those businesses has an Ethiopian business licence. In this scenario, the licenced company will apply for the funding and be in charge of carrying out the project.
  • Only foreign businesses operating in cooperation with an Ethiopian company that has a business licence are permitted to submit an application. The licenced company in this situation will apply for the funding and be ultimately accountable for carrying out the project.
  • Grant funding can only be awarded to one project at a time to applicants (or the primary applicant in the case of group applications).
  • The participation of partner businesses, NGOs, and academic institutes in many projects is possible.
  • A proposal that is turned down can only be submitted again once. The same project concept cannot be submitted again after the second rejection.
