Responsibilities
The Close Protection Coordination Officer (Detail Leader) at the FS-6 level will be responsible for the following tasks within the scope of their assigned authority and under the overall direction of the Chief Security Officer (CSO):
•provides close protection operations advice to the mission’s chief security officer or an equivalent;
•in charge of creating the security risk assessments and standard operating procedures that will guide the deployment of the Close Protection Units;
- Coordinates close protection planning in accordance with UN close protection policy, advice, and SOPs;
•In collaboration with the Chief Security Officer or an equivalent and host country authorities, develops guidelines on the security coordination required for senior UN officials traveling on official business domestically or overseas;
•Directs the Close Protection Unit (CPU) in accordance with UN recommendations for close protection;
•Collects and evaluates data pertinent to tactical close protection operations in collaboration with pertinent security units and the Chief Security Officer or equivalent;
•Aids in the creation of reports on threat and tactical risk assessments that suggest close protection-specific mitigating steps in response to threats;
•Applies mitigation measures to prevent threats from materializing or to eliminate them in order to maintain the senior UN officials’ security, safety, and wellness;
•Creates and coordinates operational plans, drills, and examines courses of action for his or her unit in accordance with the threat assessment and UN close protection policy, guidance, and standard operating procedures;
•Performs all close protection tasks in accordance with UN close protection policy and standards;
•creates and uses close protection teams that have undergone tactical training to counter the identified threat;
•Guardianship that close protection actions are carried out in conformity with UN standards and methodology;
•Works with the appropriate civilian police, military, law enforcement, and others as needed, within the scope of the authority provided;
•works in coordination with other mission security, military, police, and/or support services;
•travels with the senior UN representative and/or coordinates all necessary security measures;
•creates routine operational reports that include analysis and suggestions;
•Establishes distinct lines of power between CPU members;
•offers senior UN officials and security managers risk briefings on close protection issues for the officials’ daily activities or travels;
•Ensures adequate and efficient security coverage for the Senior UN Official’s working office and private apartment;
•based on operational needs, determines equipment, facility, and supply requirements;
•Organizes, coordinates, and carries out close protection training and exercises to make sure that operational readiness and skills are kept up to UN requirements;
•keeps a training roster and calendar in conjunction with the Security Training Unit to guarantee that every member of staff has the chance to fulfill annual certification requirements;
•monitors the effectiveness of each team member individually;
•creates a schedule for CPU team members to rotate in and out of the unit;
•identifies areas of capacity that need improvement and offers suggestions as necessary;
•oversees the monitoring of teams’ equipment and ensures that the bare minimum of equipment is provided, maintained, and used in compliance with applicable policy;
•Assists in developing the Statements of Requirement in coordination with the Chief Security Officer or an equivalent, and offers technical specifications for the purchase of unit and team equipment;
•provides close protection-related inputs for the mission’s budget proposal;
•Completes additional tasks as needed.
Working involves interacting frequently with the following:
•Security officers at the headquarters and field missions, including heads of security;
•Close Protection Security Officers employed by other UN organizations engaged in field operations such as peacekeeping;
- Personnel in the Senior UN Official’s Office;
Directors/Mission Support Chiefs;
•Leaders of the UN police and military units;
•Project managers and other staff working on the project;
Local law enforcement officers;
•Another nation’s and an international organization’s security personnel.
Results hoped for

- Correct application of SOPs under close protection in compliance with UN standards.

Education
- It must have a high school diploma or its equivalent.
Job-Specific Requirements
- It is necessary to have UNDSS close protection officer certification.
- Firearms Training Officer (FTO) Certification and UN or other Security Officer Certification are both desirable UNDSS Certifications.
- It would be ideal to get UNDSS certification in emergency trauma bag (ETB) use.
Experience at Work
- A minimum of ten (10) years of work experience in the military, police, or security management with a high school diploma or an equivalent technical or vocational qualification is necessary (five years with a first-level university degree).
- A national, private, or multinational security organization must have at least two (2) years of expertise in close protection management, preferably at the level of close protection team leader or team leader.
- It is necessary to have at least one (1) year’s worth of experience and exposure working internationally and in a conflict or post-conflict setting.
- Convoy protection experience and exposure in a post-conflict setting for at least five (5) years is preferred.
Languages
The working languages of the United Nations Secretariat are English and French. English proficiency, both verbally and in writing, is necessary for this employment.
