After being founded and run by British author Bernardine Evaristo for ten years as the Brunel International African Poetry Prize (BIAPP), the Evaristo Prize was renamed and transferred to the African Poetry Book Fund in 2022. The BIAPP, a close ally of the APBF, aimed to “encourage a new generation of poets who might one day become an international presence.” Since many of the poets who won the BIAPP have gone on to write chapbooks, full-length poetry collections, and win further awards, their greatness is indeed still recognised around the world.
ELIGIBILITY
- African writers are eligible for the prize. An “African writer” is defined as a person who was born in Africa, who is a citizen or resident of an African nation, or whose parents are Africans.
- African poets who have not yet had a full-length poetry book published at the time of application are eligible for the award. The exception to this rule is self-published poetry books, chapbooks, and pamphlets.
- Only poems written in English may be submitted; however, we also accept poems that have been translated for consideration. If the winning piece is translated, the translator will get a portion of the prize money.
- The rewards are not open to current faculty, students, or paid staff of the University of Nebraska, Akashic Books, Amalion Press, or the University of Nebraska Press, either past or present.
- Even if they haven’t released a full-length book of poems, African poets who have published a chapbook in the New-Generation African Poets Chapbooks Box Set series are still eligible for the Evaristo African Poetry Prize.
Submission Methodology
- Each year, between October 1 and November 1, manuscripts of ten poems, neither more nor less, will be accepted through Submittable.
- Please refrain from emailing any submissions. Submissions made by email cannot be tracked, so any such manuscripts will not be taken into consideration.
JUDGING
- Every year, the APBF will organise a judging panel.
- The 2022–2023 judging panel was composed of Tjawangwa Dema, Tsitsi Jaji, and Chair Gabeba Baderoon.
For additional details about the upcoming judging panel, visit this page.
- All entries for the Evaristo Prize are processed by Nicole Lachat, our book prize coordinator, in order to maintain privacy and impartiality. Please contact her at psbookprize@unl.edu with any inquiries about entries.
