TWAS has established a Joint Associateship Scheme in partnership with UNESCO and many centres of excellence in the South to allow qualified scholars from the South to frequently visit these facilities. For the duration of his or her three-year appointment, an associate may make two trips to a centre to conduct joint research. While living expenses are covered by the host centres, TWAS offers travel support for the associates and a contribution towards sustenance costs up to USD300.00 each month.

To combat the brain drain impacting many poor nations, TWAS established an Associateship Scheme in 1994 in collaboration with UNESCO. The strategy encourages scholars from developing nations to often visit places of excellence in the South. The South’s over 300 centres of excellence have decided to take part in the scheme. One hundred and seventy-five of the participating facilities are in Argentina, while one hundred are in all other developing nations.

Requirements

  • Candidates must hold a PhD or a comparable degree. Appointments are made on the basis of merit in a very competitive selection process for associates.
  • Scientists from remote institutions in underdeveloped nations are given special consideration. Applications from women scientists are especially encouraged.
  • The length of appointments is set at three years.
  • The associate is allowed to make two visits to the host centre during this time, each lasting between two and three months. The appointment may be extended for an additional 3-year term, pending funding.

Benefits

  • The Associateship pays for the Associate’s travel costs as well as a $300 USD monthly contribution for unplanned local expenses. The host centre offers the research facilities in addition to paying for lodging and meals.

Application Methodology

The ‘Apply now’ option is located at the bottom of this page, and applicants must complete the online application form by clicking on it. Candidates must upload the following paperwork in addition to completing the online application:

  • Complete list of publications; supporting statement from the head of the applicant’s home institution; a scanned copy of the applicant’s passport, even if it is expired (page with applicant’s name and surname);
  • PhD certificate; two letters of recommendation from two referees, one of whom should be from a foreign expert; and a recent invitation letter from one of the institutions listed in the files available here, on letterhead paper of the host institution.
  • It should mention the anticipated cooperation and include the recommended visitation schedule (two to three months for each visit). It must be clear that the applicant and the potential host have spoken about the scientific work that will be done during the visit and that the terms for carrying out the work, including the time of the visit and the facilities available, have been agreed upon.
